How can you tell if a directory is SEO Friendly?

    Hi all,
just wondering, what exactly qualifies for a DIR to be SEO Friendly?

    My assumption is:
    1.) Indexed by Google
2.) SEO friendly urls (Just exactly what is a "SEO friendly url" ...can someone explain?)
3.) Links with no "rel=nofollow" tags.

Is this all? Is there something I'm missing that clearly makes a directory "SEO friendly"

How can you tell if a directory IS NOT "SEO friendly"

Any replies with thoughts and comments will greatly be appreciated.

    Cheerrrs,

you can also check a directories title tag, keywords and description. Make sure the keywords match the category and that the description is not the same on all pages.

A seo friendly url will look something like this "whatever.com/category.html" or "whatever.com/category/"

I'm not sure what classifies a SEO friend "Directory" but when generating SEO Friendly websites in general, it's all about how semantic, correct, and clean you can get the xHTML (or HTML) markup.

    For example:
    Use Headings (h1, h2, h3, etc...)
If you have text (copy), put it in a <p> for paragraph.
If you have lists of items, put them in <ul> (if it's numbered, put it as ordered lists - <ol>)
Ever page should have different and appropriate meta
Make sure every pages passes validation (css and markup) - nice validator here: http://validator.w3.org/
NO POPUPS (this one is just for good measure)
The best way to make sure it's valid and SEO friendly, is to not view it with CSS/Styles. Develop the pages, give them all the appropriate tags for a viewer that wouldn't have CSS. - Then you can apply the CSS (with media types for screen, projection)

    - I could go on and on about developing SEO friendly sites... but this should give a good start :)

Ohh - Actually, a Biggy I should also add... the Links. If you use modRewrite, you can make any url with querystring look like /shopping/cart_304.html - would actually be /shopping/cart.php?cartid=304. This is a nice advantage for using apache as webserver, but you do NOT need to do this. Search engines DO parse and index querystring pages... Just do not use id= as your querystring. make sure the querstring variable is relative to what your viewing. (I heard G doesn't like the querystring variable id)

How about 'the directory owner should run all its pages through copyscape and rewrite any entries that are duplicated' (or rewrite them anyway to be sure)?

I think that having the same link text submitted to loads of directories is maybe the big problem for keeping directories SEO friendly, probably more important than having SEO friendly titles for the pages.

Does keywords still play very important role? I think their importance have receeded to a great extent as sites without any keywords are ranking #1 on MSN/Yahoo. But yes- big G still gives some importance to Keywords:D

It is really hard to tell which search engines actually give weight to the keyword tag, but to be on the safe side I make sure to use them anyway, besides it will not hurt your site unless you are over doing it. 3 keyword phrases is more than enough and do not look spammy.
