i dont understand, if you own a site and hosting a website why would you want to hotlink? i mean you can literally pot like 25,000 pictures on your site for the amount of space you get for hosting..

Laziness, not knowing you are doing harm, there are many reasons.

Are you stupid? If so, just go away.
I don't care if you don't believe me that I can sue you if you cause me expenses of any magnitude. I can, end of discussion.

It's not my problem that you can't grasp the concept of monetary damages. If I steal something from you it's no different. Of course I'll have to prove that it actually occurred, that should obvious. But that doesn't change the fact that it's ILLEGAL. Ok, wasted enough time with you. Good day.

I have nothing to prove to you. I don't give a crap what you believe. If someone causes you to lose $150k and you think all you can do is cry and sit there "oh well, tough luck, nothing I can do about it" then you are stupid.

From what I've read the copyright of the image belongs to the photographer the instance a picture is took. No need to even write copyright on the image. They can then sell the rights if they like.
Therefore, the way I see it is that if someone displays an image on their site without permission (hotlinked or hosted) then its an infringement.
I think most people would be happy with an acknowledgement of source and a link back though.

Of course if someone is hotlinking you and its eating up a lot of bandwidth (I don't think most people are bothered about the odd hotlinker), then you can always use hotlinking as a tool:)

The fact that you can prevent hotlinking doesn't change the fact that I can get my losses back from you. That would be like saying "it's not illegal to steal someone's bike if there is no lock".

I dont think it is illegal or should it be.

Can you imagine those people does not have websites? they may post a hotlinking on other's people forum coz they dont have sites to upload to or worse, they do not know images hosting service exist.

    It should not be illegal

Thanks, I'm going to hotlink all of your images so you get a huge bandwidth bill from one of my sites. We'll see if you still think hotlinking is a great idea when your account is suspended for using too much bandwidth or you get hit with a huge overage charge. Hotlinking is no different than copying content. It makes you a thief either way.

Uhm, I pull out my logs, point out where there are entries with your site as referrer and the image in question and tada, I win.

Instead of bitching about hotlinking and not doing anything about it, why not use it as a promotion tool? Watermark all your images with your site's name and voila the hotlinker is actually promoting your site. The monetary damage can be transformed into monetary gain. It just takes a little imagination.

Always funny how people use insults and then suddenly disappear. I guess arguing with trolls really is pointless.

If your so desperate to stop hot linkers, just use a .htaccess file:
All of you who dont care about 'the odd hotlinker' dont bother.

Its as simple as that. Then everyones happy. No need for legal action at all.
