I am sure there are people that DO deserve to die...I just feel unqualified to make that decision about them...

But so there is no misunderstanding, if I have to defend my life or that of my family's, you can bet that I will do what is necessary to protect me/them. I sincerely hope that I never "choose" to kill someone in such a situation...but it would certainly be possible that I MIGHT kill them (if I was able) whether I was trying or not. I would just have to live with it, no matter what happened.

In this case, the robber chose to threaten a marine...a man trained to kill those who try to kill him. A perfect object lesson. Whether or not the marine "chose" to kill this man is irrelevant. He did was he was trained to do. I do not fault the marine. In fact, I am grateful for his sacrifices in order to serve his country...regardless of what decisions his leaders make with respect to where to send him and whom to name as an enemy.

Maybe the guy was just "trash" and "deserved to die."

Maybe the guy had a sick child at home and needed money to get the medicine for them. A truly BAD choice as to how to go about getting it. Maybe he had already exhausted all other avenues.

    We just do not know.

Since I do not know, I feel unqualified to decide whether or not he deserved to die. Even if he was "trash," I mourn the loss of what he COULD have become had he made other choices in his life.

None of this detracts from my feeling of gratitude that the innocent would-be victims were kept safe. None of this detracts from my feeling that he was responsible for his own actions...for endangering those people...and ultimately for the loss of his own life.

For people who feel powerless at times due to crime, I shared the same feeling as everyone else when I first read it...GOOD! After more reflection, I decided it just was not that simple.

Better him than the innocents to be sure...but I mourn the loss of his life just the same.

Hard as it is to accept because of our "moral value system", the law of nature prevailed in this situation. Survival of the fittest. Most Marines operate with a "law of the jungle" mentality, that's why they're so brutally effective. Mugger got what was coming to him. We will never know the reason why he resorted to a life of crime, maybe he had his reasons, and maybe he didn't deserve to die. Whatever his motivations, he got done in by the law of cause and effect and the law of probabilities. In other words, karma eventually caught up to him and bit him in the ass (or broke his neck).

My dads friend killed someone for self-defense. Someone attacked his wife and all of a sudden BOOM the guys on the floor. He never went to jail because of Self Defense. Good thing he has a license for the gun. Things happen.

That's what you get for being a filthy mugger - like someone else said, if you're going to do that sort of thing then you have to be willing to accept the consequences, whether those consequences are jail time, or a broken neck.

This life is all you get, if you want to shorten yours by threatening mine, it's your choice. I don't care what the reason is, if you're starving and you threaten my life, you die.

I have 2 9mm. One for my wife and one for me. She's the better shot!
    A .32 that I carry everywhere
    A 12 guage shotgun
    A 8mm WW1 rifle

I wouldn't hesitate using any of them if I thought my or my wife's lives were in danger.

    "Shoot first, ask questions later!"

I was under the impression that Fort Knoks no longer held the gold.

And yeah. If someone is going to use violence, or the threat there of to mug others, then people have the right to kill others in self defense.

And what ever happened to the idea of selling his gun so that he could eat? Or looking for a job? Or begging? Or growing his own food in a public park? Or eating leaves?

Its really self defense. Who knows what will happen if given the chance the robber might have shot someone or will shoot someone in the future.

You would think people would have a better thing than try to steal things. Maybe set a site up and generate revenue? But suppose thats too much work for them.

Ok, very few people deserve to die.
If it is self defence, that's ok (IMO).
If it's after a crime has been committed, they should be given a depressing life sentence in prison!

When you die...That's it. You're never coming back EVER again (according to athiests).
