Using Wikipedia for advertising

Does anyone here get traffic from www.Wikipedia.org ? Just wondering if it's possible and effective.

 

If you can keep your link on wikipedia (without someone editing it off), then it works great for PR and traffic.

You can give it a shot but there's a high chance that someone will edit off your link... I've tried before..

 

So it's hard to keep the links on there? Any tips?

 

Yes it is. Your site has be be 100% relevant to the wikipedia article AND it has to be the best one on the net... a tip would be to find a non-popular wikipedia article and submitting your link there. If you submit it to a very popular one (lets say "Jessica Simpson" it'll be taken down in a matter if minutes).

 

For one of my website i did get about 150 uniques / day from wikipedia. So it's great , try it and take a look on the article twice a day.

Well if your site is 0% relevant to the article.. it probably is. Just find an article that is the most similar to your site's niche (wikipedia covers almost everything so this shouldn't be too hard to post). If it's an affiliate site, casino, gambling, adult, illegal site.. don't even bother But I doubt you'd do that.

I also have read recently (sorry I don't remember where I read this or I would have posted a link) that Wikipedia was added nofollow tags to all outbound links.

Although you can still get traffic to your site with an outbound link, getting high PR referals seem to be a thing of the past.

Your site needs to be good enough to be a reference so that your link will not be removed. Contributing something does not guarantee that your link will not be removed.

 

I have 3 links from wiki to 3 different sites one of which im astounded is still there. I got lucky because they happen to be relatively obscure niches and are not edited often.
My tip though would be to put your link in the "external links" section of the article

It's true, their links are nofollow now.

 

I've tried this without success. Relevant articles with my site as the source (for the credit on the article). Within seconds of publishing it, someone from thier staff deleted it. I do have forum members that have edited content and slipped my link in there, AND gotten away with it, but I don't see any traffic from them in my referer logs...

 

your hope of ever having your link put there let alone kept there is as good as dmoz (never sure)

 

I would prefer not to touch wikipedia....it's so far doing great without too much spamming.

I recently saw a wave of external link spam on medical tourism category, and it was edited out the next day by some one ...

Wikipedia links are now NOFOLLOW, so your PR will not increase. In terms of actual visitor clicks, I am sure that if you are in a highly trafficked topic, you will receive many clicks. However, I would only advise this if your site truly relates to a topic, and makes the topic more useful. Otherwise, your link is just spam.

 

The odds of someone being able objectively to asses the merits of their own site are so close to zero that adding your own site is de-facto spam.

Damn them. My PR dropped from 6 to 4.
Well, getting a link placed in wikipedia is hard. And if its there, 99% of the time its relevent to the article.
Plus, going no-follow never stops the spammers. In majority of the blogs comment links are no-follow. Yet, blog spam hasnt reduced by a bit.

I use Wikipedia extensively and at times visits external links from there.. I guess some other people might also do like that..

So i am sure lot of Popular and unique sites might be getting traffic from wikipedi a also..
