Yea, it's not necessarily spam at all. Not incorporating it into your business is a terrible idea.

    'cause we hate spam?

It's like hating telemarketers :p just constantly being bombarded with useless unwanted advertisements/information that take up 15 minutes of our lives!

But there are different e-mail marketing (such as newsletters, like stated above) which people like since they signed up for it!

The problem with E-mail marketing is that the freebie seekers give their name and E-mail address so often to get the next " millionaire overnight " E-book or software, then a few days later they forget that they opted in, TWO TIMES then they report, as spam, what they themselves asked for !

That's why E-mail marketing can be frustrating.

    Regards, Gary.

You're misusing the term "spam". I wouldn't be "spamming out" those
100K emails, because those people requested to receive email from
me. That means it's NOT spam.

You're right though, there's no point me sending them emails they
won't be interested in. It's a waste of their time, and my time. So
nobody who takes email marketing serious does this.

I'll say it again - if you've opted in to a list, it's NOT SPAM!! :)

I've had the what is and isn't spam discussion many times and some of those times were here on DP. I find the best way to discuss it is in casual and legal terms. In legal terms I can tell you within a margin of error what is and isn't spam based on fairly strict criteria (with some grey area). Using the legal definition, much of what most online marketers here at DP claim is spam in any email marketing-related thread actually isn't. On the other hand, when it comes to casual usage, there's no point in debating because spam is in the eye of the recipient.

It's a pointless debate anyway as I've posted fairly specific rebuttals on the legal side several times only to see them ignored by subsequent posters who don't know what they're talking about, heh. The bottom line is that spam is an emotional issue and people treat it as such; therefore they believe that their feelings are tantamount to fact, which is (of course) ludicrous. Just for example, I'm on the ADOTAS email list, but I never signed up with ADOTAS. I registered for AdBumb a long time ago and AdBumb got folded into a unified ADOTAS newsletter after it got absorbed. I didn't ask for this newsletter, but I did give my permission to another person and that permission is, according specifically to provisions in CAN-SPAM, transferrable (something a lot of commenters on the topic are ignorant of judging by their posts). Is ADOTAS "spamming" me? By the general DP consensus? Yes. In reality? No.

    My $.02 on the topic.

I've read a study before (from MarketingSherpa if I'm not mistaken) that, at the average, it takes 12 contacts with a prospect before he/she will agree to purchase what you are offering. How can you contact them at least 12 times? That is the question.

Email marketing is one of the methods used to follow up on your leads. "Follow up," of course, is a key term here, that's why an email marketing device is also called a "follow up system."

Email marketing is the weapon. But like any battle, how you win depends on how you use the tools available to you. Should you use email marketing to deliver junk messages to your subscribers? You'll just lose credibility. Or should you use email marketing to deliver to them something valuable? They will most certainly reply in kind.

If targeted in the right way, I guess e-mail marketing is still a very powerful weapon.

At least some years ago, in the organization I worked for, we got plenty new contacts from sending out e-mails. Our e-mails had an eye-catching title, a very concise body and really said something intriguing to our niche contacts. No surprise, as I said, this tactic proved to be successful in our case.:)

For those of you who think email marketing doesnt work ......... well I feel sorry for you. Email marketing is the grandaddy of internet marketing and still one of the most effective tools in the busines when done right. If you build your list properly and then build a relationship with that list it is absolutely gold. Keep in mind that it's not just your list........it's your partners/JV/Affiliates list too. Remember that last sentence, most of you won't believe the numbers I would put here so I just won't. Good luck!

email marketing is proven to work, why do you think we all get so many spam mails every single day. All leads are not created equal though, a list of 100 targeted opt in subscribers can be more valuable than a list of 100,000 uninterested people.

email marketing allows for follow up products and promotions like clockwork, and we all know that people who buy something are very inclined to make another purchase in the same category.

The traffic spike I get when sending out an email newsletter to a few thousand confirmed subscribers is tremendous. Sending one out every couple of weeks with relevant content and/or announcing what content has recently been added to the site works quite well to keep a good healthy flow of traffic.
