I don't think e-mail marketing is effective at all. Just think to yourself, do you read spam? No. Pointed prooved :)

But, there are other ways to market your site via e-mail such as getting visitors to subscribe to newsletters! That works much much better.

if you've got a site about cars ( for example ) .. then you can offer a newsletter service. if someone subscribes you can be sure that he is interested in car related offers. wait for about 50 entries , choose the right affiliate program, send the letter and look what happens.

    that's it...

Yes, it works, but only the right kinds. Buying a list of 100,000 emails and sending out a spam message will not work, but your personal double-opt in niche email list on your site or something like that almost always works. Repeat customers.

For all those who read "email" and instantly think "spam", you're
    missing out.

Email marketing is NOT about spamming. Spamming is illegal and
a bad way to do business. Contacting your prospects and even
past customers via email is NOT spamming, and is a fantastic
    way to do business.

Newsletters, periodic updates, special offers and various other
formats are all offered to confirmed subscribers who have not
just requested to be on those lists, but usually confirmed their
    requests!

Email marketing != spam. Rant over :)

My first sale ever was from someone who had subscribed to my list months before. As you've heard many times, the money is in the list. You constantly keep contact with these people. They trusted you enough to give you their e-mail address.

Couldnt agree with you more ezonline and WillB

The difference is this (both are technically email marketing):

Spam is unsolicited email; slimey jerks that waste your time with their cheazy come-ons.

Email lists are opt in. Using autoresponders like aweber or getresponse, people give you their email voluntarily, expecting to read your offers. Email lists are solicited email.

Usually, you offer them something free like an ebook or an email course. You establish trust through these items that your info is good and you have some info that they want. Then you recommend the best affiliate programs related to your niche, or your own reports, and that IS a great way to make money online.

Absolutely agree with WillB and Charlesartist's definitions of what e-mail marketing is all about.

Being an option and not an annoying piece of spam, e-mail marketing still has much to say (if in the right hands, of course )

Phew. Glad to see I'm not the only one that was thinking that.
    Thanks guys :)

For anyone that's still not sure, imagine having 100,000 people
who have opted in (requested!) to receive email from you,and
now you have a new site to launch...

so you spam those 100,000 people with an email linking to a site they probably have no interest whatsoever in, unless it is in the same theme as the site they opted in (or forgot to opt out, or didn't see how to opt out, or carelessly opted in just in case).

Yes, email marketing can have great results when well targeted, yes it ain't always spam, but 99% ot the time it is spam, at least in my mailbox.
That's my view of it unfortunately, there is so much spam around that i tend to put everything in the same bag and look at it no more.

Yes, I fell email marketing can work well for ecommerce sites, but not really for other type of sites.

Don't tell them! It's fun to watch people spew ignorance about the topic in every email marketing thread that ever pops up at DP because it means that they're not competing with potential clients, heh.
