Do you hold a marketting degree or are you self-taught? How well are you doing?

I am curious as to how many involved in marketting here have been through college degree programs or have "learned the ropes" themselves more through their own learning?

I for one have a background in computer science and am enjoying learning about a new field. The jury is still out on whether or not I have been successful (just getting started).

You can only learn marketing by yourself... you can't learn in anywhere else.
Trial and Error... and then you succeed..

    Thanks.

I was curious about people's backgrounds and whether or not anyone with a marketting foundation (from school) found it advantageous in any appreciable way.

My question stems from being a computer scientist. Anyone can learn how to code...and become rather proficient at it. I do see trends in people that are self-taught versus schooled in the discipline. However, it clearly does not take a CS degree to be successful in a computer related field. I work with someone who has done very well for himself in software but has no formal background in it. Would he do better if he did have more of a formal background? I think so. Does it seem to really be a big drag on his personal success? Nope. His success is based far less on the technical knowledge he has rather than some other skills he employs.

I was wondering about the same type of thing in marketting.

All I have been trying to do so far is look for the underlying principles first, then experiment with them. Just hard to say what works for some people as versus others.

I think the best way is to learn by doing like KingofKings said. At least in my view.

Well said. Plus marketing methods are always changing, what you were taught in school might not be as useful in 10 years.
