I know it's more important for GENERAL directories but how important is it?? How many people search for it and how competitive is "directory" as a keyword? Does it make a big difference if you are say blae or blaedirectory .com ? Thanks
For the most part if you type in directory to a search engine you will most likely only see yellow page directories. It would be better to put web directory in your domain name. That is if you are shooting for that keyword for ranking. I like directories that have directory in the domain name as well in the title tag of each category, this way if I buy a sitewide listing from that site with the anchor text "web directory" the link becomes alot more powerful.
What matters is making a brand name, that you can promote and market Similar to in the real world a top brand is Coca Cola that is a Brand Make the url memorable For sure you will benefit by this when you get into heavy duty marketing
I think it's really quite important for search engines. If you're shooting for lets say Free Website Directory you'll see www.free-website-directory.com and www.freewebsitedirectory.com These are both fairly new and we were/are both going for the SERPS for the keyword phrase in a ridiculously packed enviroment.
With big D (DMOZ/ODP) listing many pvt. directories recently it has been proved that big G is going with the trend and recogninsing the role pvt. directories hold. So once this is know to people that directories are very important for SERPs which is actually real, the importance of directories will rise in leaps and bounds and people will keep typing the word "directory' in most search terms to look for their desired website. Thanks
You should look closer at the categories - I think you'll find that "big G" is not going with the trend in recognizing the role pvt directories hold. I think you'll see that these categories have been ignored by Google for years.
