SEO and Link Back for Internal Pages

I am familiar with on-page seo techniques having read tons of posts and books on the topic. However, I have a question about linking to internal pages.

Say I have a site that sells apparel. I know how to do the on-page seo for the shoe page, the shirt page, cap page, etc. But, if I want to build a link campaign do I only submit the home page? What if in February I want to do a link campaign for the shoe page and in March do one for the cap page? Can you submit internal pages to directories or will the only accept the home page?

Some directories will accept internal pages, some will mention it in the terms but others dont.

I try and get as many non homepage backlinks as i can from directories.

many directories will only allow links to the homepage. If you can find ones that allow deeper links, by all means, take advantage of it.

Also, if you submit articles you can place deep links within the article.

It is important to get links pointing to internal pages so it looks more "natural" to the search engines. You could write articles and include links to your internal pages and submit to directories, or you could purchase link space.

Spot on. Ezine Articles works great for this. I always include a non-HTML URL, a keyword link to the home page and a keyword link to an internal page in my author bio.

Forums signatures too can be made to link to internal pages.

Excellent advice! This is the way that I have set up my author boxes for some time now and it works great.

I'll take a deep link over a homepage link anyday.

Many directories now have the option to add further deep links for a little extra. Well worth taking up. Alive directory is a good example of this.
