Subscription based directories, Good or Bad?

    Hi All.

I was wondering if people tend to prefer 1 time fee paid directories over recurring fee directories.

Most directories I've seen except for mine, Linkspub are a 1 time fee.

Could this be a deciding factor for you if you were to submit to a directory?

    Personal preference? One time fee.

I do submit to sites that have a recurring fee but have renewed few as they just have not provided much ROI.

Actually, I agree with you there.

But I'm trying to figure out how to maintain the quality over a period of time.

Lets say 10 years from now.

I mean about 90% of the 1 time fee directories out there won't be around a few years from now.

I monitored quite a few over the past year.

Once their close to getting full, they don't get many more submissions.

Then they sort of get stagnated.

I prefer site's with a one-time fee of course, but i do sometimes submit to yearly payment directories such as stpt.com etc :) The directory has to have something good about it for me to submit for yearly link and stpt.com clearly has something special :D

to buy - one time fee.

    to sell - subscriptoin.

In this month, I learned that people like yearly payment for some reason. I thought monthly is more affordable. Big comepanies don't seem to want to deal with small monthly fee.

All depends upon quality of the directory. If the directory is of high quality i wont have problem with yearly or monthly or one time. All i want is a link from them. Hehe

I use a small subscription rate for my pr6 directory....I figure that some people can afford a small subscription instead of a large one time fee.

Depends on quality directory. For example a bid directory like Aviva, Alive should have subscription based links so they can maintain quality of their directory! :)

I will only submit if it is a one time fee. Keeping track of amny subscriptions is not worth my time. The way to keep the directory from getting stagnant is to keep adding new categories as the old ones fill up. New sites are created every day which means new customers are created every day.

    could use more.

I don't think there are that many subscription directories out there anyways.

    One possible model.

Regular Links, you can offer year or permanent listings example:
    Year $10 / Permanent $25

    Featured Links
    Year Payments

Regular listings will get buried inside the directory as it grows, featured can have the better spots.
This model will unsure future grow and ROI delivery to new customers.

I prefer one-time fees instead of recurring/subscription fees, which is why I'm only charging one-time fees in my directory for all the submission types. For the featured listings, I charge a one-time fee which lasts for one year, and then it is automatically converted to an express listing after the paid time expires. That way, the listing remains in the directory, and the owner could just choose to pay again if he still wants his listing to remain featured.
