To me search engines seem to be getting a hell of a lot more responsive lately. I got a sitewide on an authorititive site, and i checked my backlinks two days later in Yahoo and it was showing up already. Another thing i've noticed, is small competition search results stay stagnant for a while. Searches with 3,000,000 results get reindexed once in a blue moon. On the other hand, my main keyword phrease results (400,000,000 results) have been re-indexing for two weeks now, and it seems like it's never going to take a break. It used to be once a month i would see my stuff jump around and re-settle. Then it went to every two weeks or so - it would take about 4 days to reindex. Now it seems like it is perpetually reindexing. This is Google of course. Anyone else notice this? So my guess is since SE's are getting more responsive, they should also take less time to digest and give credit for incoming links. What are your thoughts on this?
It depends on a lot of factors. What they show you online is just one part of the equation. I can see in the webmaster control panel that google pretty much crawls my entire site every other day (the average number of crawled pages is about 50% of my site). Of course some pages are crawled way more frequently, so if I put a link there it will be in Google in a matter of hours. Its funny, one day I noticed a huge spike in traffic and it was from a post that someone made in my forum. It had no backlinks but from the front page of my site and it ranked for a very competetive term (number 10). It was a very short lived search term (like olympia 2004 - although thats not it). So to answer your question: It depends where your link ends up. If that site gets crawled very often, your link will be in the engines right away. What they do with it (e.g. when they crawl YOUR site) is something only they know.
I think google show less backlink because they only update backlinks every three months not like YAhoo and MSN they update backlinks everyday. You will also notice that after 3 months of waiting your backlinks will increase fast depending on your link building. And I think also that google only display your backlinks from trusted site.
I don't think that's true. There's no way MSN and Yahoo are more on top of back links than giant google. I think google is just more secretive about tell the world what they know about whos linking to your site.
seems like none of you have tried out the google webmaster tools where you can see all your backlinks.
No, i was sopmeone post about that a few days ago, is that something in google webmaster tools that is new? I'm going in now to check it out, thanks for reminding me.
Lots of things are new in the Webmaster tools. The best feature is that you can see all the backlinks google recognizes.
G shows all the backlinks now at the webmaster tool page. You better check that if you haven't seen it yet. Pages that are crawled more often than others seem to me like a more important page. It could be considered as an authoritive page, regardless of your entire site not being so authoritive. It's possible. So the key is relevancy again. The quality backlink pointing to the right relevant page. I think this determines how fast G indexes it. The right combination should shorten the time, so I would say only a matter of few days, the page should get indexed. As a matter of fact, some authoritive gadget blogs get top 5 almost in a matter of day or two with almost any new keywords they use. So getting a link from such sites almost directly reflect to your position at SERPs, as well as the speed of being indexed.
