    Hi

I need a programmer to work on a web project. What are the best places where I could get a knowledgeable experienced freelancer for reasonable money?

I know about rentacoder. Other suggestions?

Did you like / dislike rentacoder?

I've gotten a bunch of projects done (small as one web page, as large as a complex site with a downloadable toolbar) done with outsourced/freelancers and it's worked great.

Also check out www.sypad.com which will be launching shortly.

From past experience with GetAFreelancer, RentACoder, Elance and Guru, Guru.com seems to be the best with a very good system in palce and qualified coders.

I'd try here on DP first.

I'm continually suspicious of Rentacoder, Elance and the like, the prices (even bearing in mind the international nature of the bidders) are just too low to get any real quality coding done & build an ongoing relationship ... Just my opinion, there are bound to be people who've done well off these services.

Hi, I have used rentacoder quite a bit but I do have one problem with it. If a bidder backs out of the job after you accept their bid within 24 hours and you have sent across the funds your funds are held by rentacoder. If you have paid by credit card then it actually costs money (Around 3% in Australia/ New Zealand) to get that money placed back on your credit card.

So, quick math if you accept a job for $1000 then the bidder backs out then to get your money back is going to cost you $30 and you have had no work done. This is a real problem and one that should be addressed as currently bidders who do this within 24 hours are not penalised. I can understand the odd instance but there should be something where if a bidder does it more than five times in a month their account is suspended or somthing similar.

Just something that I thought sellers should be aware of re rentacoder

    Cheers
    Markus

Markus, there is a new option called "Expert Guarantee" on RentACoder you might check it. I'm a "Top Coder" on RentACoder and from my experience I think you shouldn't be too worried. If you choose a competent coder with decent feedback and discuss your requirenments well before accepting his bid you'll do very fine. I've used the 24 hours cancellation only when the buyer tried to make me work (much) more then his initial specification. It is a dishonest thing to do and I run away from such people :D
I would say, the key thing is a good communication before you accept any bid. This way you see who's serious, who's not, once you decide on the coder you can send him a message saying that you've 100% decided to hire him and will do it after he confirms he's still interested and that he has reserved his time for your project.
Remember that the coders are there to earn money and not to fool you.
To be honest, when I spot a buyer who got many during-24-hour cancellations that tells me something about the buyer.

IMO scriptlance is easily the best. elancer - i think - charges you to view projects + GAF is too large and u have some crazy bids from their.

i am a webmaster and programmer on scriptlance!! works brilliantly.

I wouldn't reccommend rentacoder to anyone really. As buyer, you have no protection. I had only bad experiences lately, and I'm not going to use that anymore.

rei1974 it's hard to understand the standpoint that you have no protection on RAC as a buyer. I think they are the best freelancing site when it comes to protecting both buyers and coders. They have several validation layers for buyers, nobody does that. As a buyer on RAC you're in a much better position then an employer trying to find the right person for the job. You get more offers, more work done for the money and top quality coders if you work with the most respected coders on RAC.
By the way, they are in this business for a quite some time, have a huge base of registered buyers and coders. I work mostly as a coder there, at times I'm a buyer.
Like I said you have to master the bid choosing process and you'll be doing extremely well as a buyer:
    - if you choose coders with good reputation over the months you'll be safe
    - if your project specification is good you'll attract more good and interested bidders, and be much safer and more honest to the coders at same time. A lot of buyers don't know what they want and they try to hide this fact. That's the source of 80% of the problems I guess. Be honest, if you're not shure what you want say it and coders might suggest you things. But if you know exactly what you want and write it all down I think your project has some really good chances to attract a lot of bids and succeed if you take some time to interview your bidders. At times I get projects altough I bid three times higher then all bidders just because I ask the right questions.
    - communicate very well with your bidders before (and after) accepting their bid. It's not so hard to smell a not-so-to-be-trusted coder if you exchange a couple of messages with your coders.
That's my opinion. I'm not affiliated with rentacoder or any other freelancing site. I think rentacoder is definetely one of the best.

Well my mistake was to accept the job of an user the same day. I learned not to trust the people on internet anymore after that day, when I got a DMCA warning because the guy stole the content from a well known site (what I should have done? searched through the whole internet to see if he hadn't stolen the content from 1 of those 100 millions sites?).

    I agree ;)
The disadvantage of getafreelancer is that they charge quite high fees in my opinion. The buyer must pay a refundable $5 fee (which is refunded after you paid the coder), but the coder must pay 10% of the revenue they get by coding ... could be much cheaper!
But okay, getafreelancer has some real good coders on it, you'll definitely find someone who can get your job done with a high quality :)
