20k hits crashes server

    Hi All,

I recently paid for a link from a very busy site and the result was 20k more hits than I usually get. According to my host (hostroute.co.uk) it crashed the server.

They say that they thought it was a problem with my code but the entry page for this 20k hits was a basic .htm file with no server-side scripting.

OK, I probably should've informed them that there would be a massive increase in traffic but the servers should've been able to handle that amount of traffic should'nt they?

I'm hosting under a reseller account; do I need a dedicated server for this amount of traffic?

    Many thanks, p.

Their servers should have been able to handle this traffic.
Only if you'dd have received this 20K lets say in a few minutes, only then it should crush.

I think it was over a few hours. I think it should've been able to cope too.

Dude if you have a dedi, just change settings of max connections or tweak it to a certain connections per ip, so that your server is more stable

If that doesnt work remove all un needed services.
    Lemme know

well it depends on the server, you may have account with other 20-100 resellers and your collective load could easily crash it :)

If your site is getting 20K hits within couple of hours then you should switch to dedicated hosting which is crucial in ensuring your website's smooth functioning.

From where did you purchase the link? (Pm me)

It largely depends on your website but you mihgt want to consider a VPS/Dedicated server.

    Hi Guys,

Thanks for all the responses. My site was in the niche/realm that gets a lot of hits ;)

The site is still down at the moment and I'm trying another shared hosting package - which has had it's teathing problems already - but hopefully it'll be up and running again within 24hours.

The link that generated all those hits cost me about $250.

    Cheers, p.

    Thanks rootbinbash,

I think I'm being realistic in aiming to make $100 per week from my site but I'm not sure how many hits I need to get to achieve that - if I knew this I could justify spending $50 per month on hosting.

Do you think I'm being realistic?

For some reason I have a mental block when it comes to understanding ROI! :)

    Cheers, p.

It really depends on what your plans are. If you're planning on mainting 20,000+ visits a day (buying more links or whatever), you'll probably want a VPS or dedicated. But if this was just a one time thing, I wouldn't bother and would continue on with your site.
