I have a questions and i would like to hear what you guys think about my plan. I have this sad, PR4 site (ze*bob.com). I dont rank very well because of my pr, i think. So, i was thinking to power myself to pr6 or higher. I want to buy (rent actually) a sidewide link from PR7 site. The site is a blog and is about general topics. Now, i have been trying hard to get myself more links, including paid directory and etc. So, do you think buying just one sidewide link from PR7 site can help to boost my site to PR6? Or at least a PR5? Will a link from one PR7 domain could help? or do i need at least 5 (example) PR7 site to do the trick? Your opinion is most welcome as i dont know much about links/pr. I feel the need to increase my pr but not sure whats the best way. Any past experience with your own website? Thanks.
PR doenst have anything to do with ranking really. Well some but I am not going to get into that. To help your ranking though you should get related links. If that PR7 site is related to yours then yest it can help you in your rankings.

A link from a PR7 site may raise your PageRank, but I doubt it'll do much for your ranking in the search results (I can't really comment as I don't know the competitiveness of the phrases you're targeting, but it's most likely a single PR7 sitewide link won't help). It'll take more than that to push you to the top. Concentrate on getting variations of your targeted phrase as anchor text from pages relevant to your site. You'll likely notice results quicker than you would by chasing PR.
I don't like renting links because when you stop renting them, your PR might go down. Especially when you rent several PR 7 links.
A backlink from a PR7 will pass on PR for sure but it also depends on how many outbound links that page has. If yours was the only backlink then you would get a full share but if the PR7 page had 400 links then you are getting 1/400th the amount. Its how Google determines the quality of the link. If you are the only backlink on a PR7 site then Google sees that and recognises that backlink as of high quality as a high PR7 site has recommended you. It is a lot more complicated but the same theories remain.
Wow, thanks people for all of the feedback. I think for now i wil need to work on free links first. I have done some research on pages/sites that offer links for sale. From what i see, usually if you have sidewide links from pr7 or pr8, google will list only those pages that are close to your pagerank. So, say ur pr5, google may show links from pr7 site but only from pages that are pr5 or less. I see backlinks from other website from pages with lower pr and some dont have pr at all. Maybe google is aware of link sales and have done better job at reducing the effect of buying links, especially from sites that are 2 to 3 PR above yours. Natural links tend to be deap links. Going specifically to a page on your website. Google knows how many clicks it takes to reach that particular page. So, the more clicks to reach that page from the homepage, the better. Link sales works by selling links to your homepage. And when you have a bunch of unrelated links sitting in one corner of the page.. combined with the fact that those links are pointing to a much lower pr site.. AHA.. link sale. Link sales are one way links. If you had like 2 or 3 sites and they all link to one another, google may know that this belongs to one webmaster. Couple with your whois info, bingo.. google knows it not a link farm. And when you do a search on the backlinks, they show pages from your sites with the highest pr . My case is the same. I link all my sites together and backlinks show pages from my sites with the highest pr. This is not true for other sites, the ones that you dont own. I have seen my back links from one particular website change from showing a higher pr page from that one site to a lower pr page BUT its from the same website. It looks to me like you have to reach a trechold. If you have links from 1000 different domains.. AHA.. your pr will increase. Your backlinks will show sites from high pr pages. But if you get it from directory, like everybody else, then your backlink structure is not unique. Its just like most other people out there. So, the summary, i think, make sure your links comes from as many different domains as possible. If your links come from a variety of website (about the same topic) then you have a good chance of getting a higher pr. PR is again the possibility that a surfer reaches your site. The more links you have coming from a variety of domain, the higher is the chance for the surfer to find your page. One link from pr7 site cant do that. I could be wrong. Whats do you think?
