keyword popularity, and getting higher placement in serps for many keywords

OKay, I'm ranked 12 for the main keyword "student community" thats the tittle of the website and main idea. But that keyword isn't popular at all, it has competition but no hits in google at all! I used that as an anchor text for most of my link submissions etc. Now I wonder, how do I make my website rank better for other keywords I have? college review, etc.?

how do I get good placement for all my keywords? should I submit my website to thousands of directories with different anchor text? will that increase my SERP?

Submitting to directories is like building a dirt highway. It won't last long. Google rankings are based on the quality and relevance of a link. If you have enough quality relevant links pointing to your site you will start to rank for phrases that are on your page even if that exact phrase/keyword is not in any of the anchor text of your links. Anchor text does help though specify what is relevant to your site.
