Really smart robot that can learn? I would love to see one and I have been working on and off in the field since the '80s.

I hate to say it - but I think the popular notion of "AI" is a mythical creature. The reality of AI is a huge field of methods that are able to address very specific "toy" problems. Not that it is bad - just not what the "average" person expects when thinking of "AI". Remember - TANSTAAFL - every AI research hates that!

we can't imagine it now but think about this. when the idea of every house having electric outlets in it with hundreds of power plants all over the world, who thought that it was a serious idea? now we are talking about learning robots. if they come up with learning robots in 100 years, they will think us very primitive.

--just another way of looking at it.

You might as well be talking about unicorns and dragons - they are equally mythical.

Considering we arent yet fully aware of how our own brain functions I don't see it as a possibility to build something even more powerful from silicon and solder, not happening.

    Also, no they can't.

I don't think we'd try to replicate the brain but we would develop iterative processes that can do certain tasks better than a brain can do. We already have search engines that can find results in milliseconds and continously refine results. Cars can now parallel park themselves and it's not a big leap to having cars drive themselves (GPS, distance sensors, cruise control, traction control are almost all the components needed only a little integration work is left).

Well I got getta to work on my AI project that will generate then next big thing on the internet.

OK, Hal, here's your data: {email, Netscape, Yahoo, video streaming, Napster, Google, MySpace, You Tube}.

    Hal: INIT AI algorithm
    Hal: process data set
    Hal: compiling resultset
    Hal: null pointer error
Hal: Do you want to restart now?

None of those things are even close to artificial intelligence, those are purpose built programmable silicon circuits, it could be very loosely linked to it, but AI ( as people think of it ) is I-Robot style technology, being able to take in new information and know what to do with it, the closest we have to that are the mars rovers ( sort of technology ), they can make decisions that overide the operator of the craft, even so, that's based on mathematics that's it's been programmed with, it never learnt anything, and so isn't intelligent.

You can't argue it, theres no computer on earth that is as powerful as a humans mind, none, and untill we know exactly how that works, we'll never be able to replicate it to make an artificial version.

i don't think that that is entirely true. computers are faster, more efficient(the search engine example was a good one) and can do some things better than us. yes those computers are much larger than our brains, but eventually we cold make super computers the size of a PDA. only problem is that we, with human brains, program them. we can't program them to be smarter than us, if we don't know how. that is why we need AI. but we don't have that yet.

    -- you're right in a way:eek:

your brain isn't only responsible for the things you're conscious of, there is not a computer that can handle the complexity of the human nervous system, don't be so niave - this isn't hollywood.

Yes that is the most important thing in the AI.
Ofcourse you probably got this idea from the Matrix.
I don't think the AI will one day have a brain of itself and then just decide to overthrow the human race. But you never know....

true... but we haven't figured out how to make a robot with a sensory system as complex as ours yet.

At the moment, computers have no intellegence, just like a calculator (IMO).
They just have "knowlege" that they can't utilise by themselves.

anyway, AI would be great, it would be able to work super fast AND roughly 24/7!!
Just as long it doesn't replace me/me in my job im ok!

Right on target - I think you are starting to move in the right direction now. I love the idea of AI, but I am very realistic about its evolution in the near-term. Like I keep saying - when I see something that can vacuum my whole house - moving books and magazines and furniture out of the way - then I will start getting excited.

that has been my point all along. we have AI, but not nearly come close to matching the human brain in intelligence, but i still think that it is faster. a calculator can do math MUCH faster than a human.
