Yup you read it right, Google loses Gmail Trademark suit in Europe. Apparently the suit has been going on for quite sometime. It appears that a German born capitalist Daniel Giersch has had the trademark for 6 years. And Google launched their Gmail in 2004. Gmiail offered Daniel Giersch $250,000 for the trademark, Giersch turned it down.

Actually the guy doesn't from my understand from the article. The registar took the domain back and gave it to Google. I guess it wasn't suppose to be registered by anyone else other than Google.

That's not true. Take a look at gmail.de
Does it look as it's in google possession? No. And i bet they will not get their hands on it soon.

They have to set the offer low so he won't go too high with the counter offer.
Business as usual. Basically if they decide to play tough and play it in court some more they will spend way more than $250K.

I heard about this on TechCrunch a few months ago - the rumour was that the old Gmail accounts would be converted to Googlemail and would no longer work by them self (eg. @gmail.com wouldn't work). Could cause a lot of hassle - get changing those PayPal email addresses and email subscriptions now!

Just another update and Google and Gmail. Now they are after the Gmail.pl. Apparently a few Polish Poets bought the name and the rights to it. And Google wants them to give up the domain.
