Sometimes. If the guidelines are long (as in length) I do. But if it looks like the same guidelines from the other two directory I just submitted to, I don't bother.

As I said, I never bother with link directories that allow free submissions and are just poor, lazy replicas of other directories that I have already seen (both content, template and category strategy level) - if they don't bother doing more then that, why should I bother reading the guidelines? After all - they are all the same.

Usually I try to at least skim over the guidelines. If I'm paying I am sure to read over them.

I didn't read it before---but after few directories refused some sites---I just go though for few moments while submitting in paid directories!

    I read them when

    -It is a paid submission
-It is free, but the guidelines are on "submit page". If they are on a separate page most probably I won't bother to visit it.

You would think that people would read before paying. Lucky for the ones that don't read and I can't accept their sites I refund them their money. Some sites say in their guidelines that you pay whether or not the submission is accepted.

If they are free then I dont read them very often. Most guidelines are identical for many directories so as long as your info meets the general guidelines it should get accepted.

I always read the guidelines but i admit to making mistakes at times, if i dont read them then ive wasted my time and just fooling myself.

It is funny though when i receive an email suggesting that i read the guidlines when there are none at all on the directory, quite rare though admittedly.

    take it easy ;)
my business plan allows an extra investment for testing purposes, and for competition investigation.
5 bucks is not the end of the world, nor it is affecting one's business model.

Its amasing the number of people that don't - i've just been running the Unleashed Directory as free submissions (now paid) and although i really, really stressed that if the guidelines weren't followed listings would not be approved roughly 50% of people still didn't bother to properly read the guidelines... some where even directories and SEO companies who should know better...

People, regardless of their nature, are looking to submit to as many directories as possible using as few time as they can. This results in jumping over the guidelines very often.
