It seems that more people think links from related sites are valuable than a link from directory category.

For example, say, you have an Internet marketing blog.

Do you prefer a link from webmaster related site

    Or

A link from directory - Internet > Internet marketing

    What's your opinion?

There is no question in my mind. Relevant links are much more important than directory links. Google has devalued almost all BS directory links. Yahoo Directory, BOTW, and DMOZ would be an exception.

It is is a known high PR directory from them. If not I would rather have it from a high traffic webmaster related site. If it is a niche directory that might change my mind though. Are you using these results to make a decision?

It's more rather general question. The value of directory link vs. relavant link from a website/blog.

Of course Yahoo! and few other authoritive sites ARE exceptions. It's obvious that a link from PCword is way better than someone's PC review blog with PR7. So, authority factor is not included in the question. But just the niche factor.

For me it does not matter. A relevant link is a relevant link no matter were it comes from. All this talk about se's giving no weight to directory links is crap if you ask me. A marketing category with alot of content about marketing is just as good as having a link in a marketing related website. To a degree the directory link my be even more powerful due to the fact that your link is most likely to be surounded by content, unless you have a sitewide listing.

I prefer links from relevant sites with content and with less outgoing links though I also go for directory links if the directory is already not spammed .

I see. Some directories got way too many links on a page.. Now that would be a problem.

But any relevant site has a page full of outbound links too.

So can you answer this question: What is the best number of links per link directory sub-category internal page ?

It depends on the quality of each site, traffic, number of outgoing links and so on...

1 is the best :D -- best for the buyer.

As for the benefit and practical function of directory itself, I would say 20 to 30?

But remember, the original question is for those who advertise or buy links. Not the owner of site or directory.

This means that I could just create enormously diversed categories in order to keep them organized and divided. That would give link juice and PR happiness to everybody
