Well as we know PR only measures link popularity. Some people here question if forum links are devalued because they are considered not relevant.

No they just won't help SERP's, relevancy doesn't affect PR to the best of knowledge

The extension of your domain makes no difference to how quickly your website gets indexed

    Update:

The blog has now been indexed in MSN. Links are now at 1293. We should expect to soon be indexed by Yahoo and Google.

How will know how strong your back links are if your site starts out high but then disappears because of lack of content?

    Hello
Looks like links in forums do have an effect but Google seems to handle backlinks different
Just my personal photographie site stated beginning of August 2006
Contains about 900 photos but very little text
Besides a submitted sitemap, I have only been active in photography related forums
    Approx. 4,000 visitors / 25,000 pageviews/month

Was cached with Google after 5 days
    Google Pagerank for: www.photomagie.eu 2/10
    Link popularity for www.photomagie.eu
Google Yahoo! AllTheWeb AltaVista MSN HotBot Total
    0 91 90 92 7 0 280

    Sincerely
    hape

I've been running an experiment to see how sites treat signature backlinks for about 1 and a half months now. I have a website with about 10 pages of content using a subdomain (which uses keywords). The link from DP has the specified keywords. Anyhow i'm ranking top 20 in yahoo already for the phrase. Google has just started indexing the site too.. it should finish in a few days then we'll see if it ranks my site in google.

The experiment will last for 6 months total. The sig has a bit more then 2k posts.

Currently my site has 745 links according to Y! and 173 according to MSN

I launched a site month ago and got only links from forum signatures and now I am no. 10 on google for my key phrase with 197 mil. results. I think that is a prove that signature links from forums such as DP will help a lot.

    What's the phrase?

Site results generally don't mean its easy or difficult, but if there are 175 million of them chances are at least a hundred or so have been SEO'd... so I must say I am quite impressed

I don't think the number of results matters at all!! look at the amount of traffic the search term gets per year and you'll see how competitive it is.. any high traffic search term has people optimizing. The one I chose wasn't very competitive but it does get a few searches a week which means it could be worth it for me.. The term is in the insurance field which means I can get nice money for targeted traffic.

It's not that the number of results matter, it's that if there are more site's that come up, there is a higher probability that there is competition (I have struggled to rank for phrases with 1 million results, yet easily ranked for searches which returned around 10 million results

Its been over 2 weeks since the start of the experiment. Blog has just over 1500 links from DP and is still not indexed in Google or Yahoo. This shows that forum links are very ineffective at getting you indexed. It is therefore advisable that you use directory links for indexation.

Hopefully at the next PR update we will see what result forum backlinks have on PR for those that are interested in high PR. If the blog is eventually indexed we should be able to see to what extent backlinks help serps.
