I have absolutely no experience with CMS systems and blogs. I am starting yet another website, and I am considering using Joomla. My new website is going to be about global warming and the environment. It will have articles, polls, updated new once in a while, and links to other sources, etc. I was thinking about Joomla for this. Is that a good idea?
I happen to be fan of Joomla myself. Very easy to use and a great support group. Just make sure you read up on the seo optimizations for it.
I believe it is. Joomla offers everything you claim to need for your new site and without any additional plug-ins.
I use Joomla for large sites where I need a lot of features, but for small one I think cms made simple is better and easy.
i'm joomla fan too. you can use joomla very simple solutions you can use joomla for complex solutions. in fact , you use joomla what you want and it has great support and it has tones of extensions
Ok, so I am going to choose Joomla. I could choose from this list: Drupal Geeklog Joomla Mambo Open Source PHP-Nuke phpWCMS phpWebSite Post-Nuke Siteframe Xoops Anyway, do you think its even worth using a cms script for a site like this? I just figured I wanted to try one out so this would be a good bet...
To quote your first post in this thread, as long as you mention words like "articles" or "update" then a CMS is definitely the way to go. It will save you loads of time once your articles database grows, and future updates will be easy to handle. A fan of Joomla, too.
As others have said, Joomla is a great CMS. It has all the features you are looking for and a ton of templates if needed. I suggest taking a look here at the many options as well : opensourcecms.com (can't post live links yet, sorry)
Ok, so i decided to go with Joomla. I am going to be using it on www.missionenvironment.com. I already installed the template and added my own pic on top and makeshift logo, but now I need to get the content on it. I am having a huge problem in trying to learn this system. Anywhere where I can read a good tutorial? I just want to make an article database and stuff like that....
Quick questions. Didnt want to make an entire new thread for it: 1) How to I get the poll on the front page to appear in that spot on ALL pages? 2) Why is that "Welcome to Mission Environment on every page? I dont mind the Title Bar, but that article needs to only be on the front page...
To answer those 2 questions: Log in to Administrator panel, and go to Modules -> Site Modules. Click to edit Polls module, and see the multiselect list on the right panel. Choose "All" to publish the module on all pages, or select particular items to get the poll appear on those pages only. Hit Save. Now open the other module, I assume you called it "Welcome to Mission Environment". On that same list, select "Home" item. Hit Save. This should do the trick.
plus it has a lot of extension to do a lot! You can use JoomSEF for SEO Urls EDIT: here is direct link for JoomSEF: http://extensions.joomla.org/compon...search/Itemid,35/searchword,joomsef/cat_id,0/
Thanks for the insight guys, I am starting to get the hang of this. I have another question. I want to make some new pages (an advertising page, an article database page, and another page with just tips on how the user can take action). Im not really sure what those would be considered (modules, components, content, etc), and how to go about creating them. Could you just help me run through the steps to set those pages up and get their links in the main menu? I appreciate it.
