Be careful when buying expired domains....

Sometimes expired domains are great because someone somewhere may have built up a domain ~ developing content, acquiring backlinks, search engine positions & maybe a good page rank. And sometimes, sadly for that person, he or she may have missed renewing the domain for whatever reason and this opens the opportunity for someone else to profit from the name. It's like finding an abandoned house all nicely done up with furniture intact, ready for someone to just move in. :)

But be careful, things may not be as they seem. The 'house' may have been abandoned on purpose!

I came across this expired domain.
PlasmaWorld.net. Very decent name. Even has a few backlinks. Good niche. Very possible to turn it into a profitable website even as a .net.

However, upon researching the name a bit, I found this.

Bottom line, always do your homework.

Well, the domain is still available. Anyone still interested?

Shows that it definitely pays to research domains that you're going to buy!
Especially if you plan to put adsense etc on them...

There are some good domains, which were misused at some point, so they are best avoided.

Well that's obvious. There is no 'all are good' rule for expired domains, active domains or domains to come
ALWAYS you must check what you buy. It's universal law

How would you recommend that a beginner check before they buy...How does a person know that the former domain was linked in "bad areas" etc?

don't understand how the guy can lose money with his domain, if it is a quality name, always buy, no matter the history, who cares it is on black list, no pr? so what sex.com got no pr

lol even after reading the link supplied by Openforsale
    ...
disagree hard to get traffic from search engine queries if you have no PR (page ranking)..would take a lot of promotion, inbound links etc ..the only example you give sex.com and sex is probably the most searched word on the net...it is probably the only site that doesn't need PR

On the other side of the coin, there are also expired domains with very GOOD history. :)

For example, I just acquired www.WebMultimedia.net. I think it's a very good name and I love it.

It has over 50 backlinks and what's more it also has a listing in Yahoo's directory. I'm sure you know that it costs you US$299 just to get your site reviewed by Yahoo for inclusion. And even then, there is no guarantee you will even get in.

And that's not all, apparently WebMultimedia.net is also an award-winning site!

So to get a domain like this for $8 is really cool. :D

If some of you are interested in picking up domains like these see my sig link below ~ referring to expired domains.

I have also purchased expired domains because they have had backlinks that still exist, PR etc but sometimes found that the amount of SPAM that went to these domains was uncontrollable and would often fill up my hosting accounts so I in the end would sell them off for cheap just to get rid of them

I have bought expired domains with backlinks some have turned out profitable others just seem to be dead but great sale potentials. I guess the balance in purchase is the name quality and sale potentials.
