Today was the first time ive seen a 'sign up for Gmail' link on gmail.com .

I suppose this means that they've finally opened it up for everyone - maybe its out of 'BETA' mode?

Is this true of all countries, or just UK?

I can't view that page...it sends me to my inbox there, where I still have invites to give away. So I can see where the confusion comes from for anyone that didn't know it was public.

But if it's public, then what are my invites for now?

The service [Google Mail] is no longer by invitation only. This welcome page shows an ever-increasing amount of storage available per user, currently about 2,815 MB

Not only did they open it a long time ago, but the counter has also been counting for a long time.

yfs1, I do not remember if it's opened for public earlier, previously you need to have an invitation link to open a gmail account.

Stevejohn, try this link and check if you see the signup button.

I just came to acknowledge that it's in UK only(not sure)

These days Google knowing you visit porn sites is the least of your worries when it comes to data collection. ;)

People selling GMail for $50 - man, I missed out on a trick there! I've got about 10 accounts, each with 100 invitations - so that could be $50,000 I could have made. If only I knew about the Digital Point BST forum back then!

Initially $50 was cheap on eBay

Of course back then even if you had an account, it was rare to get any invites in it
