A white background means 74 watt. A black background uses 59 watt. Google receives around 200.000.000 visitors per day. Lets say every visitor stays for 10 seconds, which makes 550.000 hours. If G had a black background, we would have 15 watt of electricity. This means 8,3 megawatt/hour energy gain. Or in other words, 3000 megawatt/hour for a year. With one background change, G would help us save $300k Ever thought of this?
This would make a great parody Google is evil video. How much pollution is Google's background causing, how much of the rain forest has been destroyed by Google's background
Only applies to CRT monitors. LCD monitors use more energy making a pixel black (it doesn't simply "turn off" that pixel.) So if this was 10 years ago, maybe it would've been helpful. http://digg.com/design/Black_Google_Would_Save_3_000_Megawatts_a_Year
plus when you thing about it: 200,000,000 divided by 300,000= 666.66666666666666 Damn, that was weird, I didnt know that was going to happen... Makes you wonder eh?
lol i could never think of that... nice points. in firefox u can customize your default background, i did it once when i couldnt stand looking at white anymore, hurted my eyes... made it grayish, was less bright in the face. now i know i also economized a lil`
thats quite interesting....never thought there would be such a difference in wattage for just different colors produced!
