I have done a lot with both and spent a huge amount of time reviewing these and the other competition out there (several months). We opted for Drupal but I would say that I was biased by my requirement to run large complex sites, if we were going to generate a lot of small sites that were not fuctionaly complex then probably joomla would be a better choice. Drupal is way more flexible and the community is extremely active and growing at a very rapid rate.

One key piece of advice is if you are going to run very busy sites and rely on some of the contributed modules then be prepared to hack some code.

Drupal is way more powerful in most areas and with the upcoming release of V5 it becomes a lot more user friendly.

One of my Drupal sites if you want to see what it can do: mailfriends.com, uses over 90 contributed modules and has decent traffic levels, we only relauched this last week so still fixing the odd glitch.

Just DO NOT use Joomla with windows.
    SEO wise, it's awful!

The SEO will be revamped for Joomla 1.5, and the community is huge. If you go for Joomla it's a safe choice for the next 2 years for sure.

I guess I have a slightly different perspective on this topic. I'm a designer who knows HTML and barely anything about PHP. I decided to move my site to Joomla and after a week I was comfortable enough to administer it and to install uncomplicated components and modules.

I have opensef installed and will find out how well in works down the line.

I like Joomla so much that I now use it for clients who seem to love it so far.

    I hope that helps.

If you are planning a community website then drupal is a better option, but the real problem with drupal is lack of professional templates. Also as far as modules are concerned joomla is powerpacked with a large number of modules with a support of a large number of community.
I started webdesign with drupal but now I have made plans to shift to joomla.

I'll keep this thread tagged and in mind. I have one Joomla site currently and am going to put up a drupal site next.

As I monkey with both I will let you know how well they work. The joomla site is a blast and easy to administer, hope that Drupal is as well.

Check my joomla showcase site http://joomlapoweredsites.com/
So, if you are a hard programmer, you like to experiment with code, you don’t care much about user-friendly and usability or you think Drupal’s solution is OK – use Drupal.
If you wish to ba able to set up addons (components and modules) with 2-3 mouse clicks without even unpacking files manually on server (Joomla will do that for you) or you’re just like me love Joomla – go ahead and give it a try.

yes I agree every developer has it's own unique way of handling scripts and problems.. so the answer to that question will depend on your standards as a developer and your own way of coding structure

Just curious, what is a literally huge site in your books?

I have scoured the net finding large applications. A client of mine is looking to deploy a site that will have a hundred thousand plus hits a day, and cannot find many sites like this running Joomla.

I just built my first drupal site (a uofl forum) and it was way easy to set up even though I have a rotten host. The forums answered all my questions well. And if anyone is speaking from v 4.X experience, v5 is way easier to install. It's as easy as wordpress.
