wikipedia links

    Are wikipedia links always good?

    Ok, heres a hypothetical scenario

I have a low pr page about the lesser spotted niche woodpecker
If you type in the name i'm number 1 in google

Currently there is no page on wikipedia, but I can write one, with my link (which won't be removed because my page is an authority) - I get extra traffic from wikipedia

In six months time, no doubt wikipedia will be number one in google (and i'll be number 2), due to the high pr link from wikipedias woodpecker page to the niche page

So, should I write a page, and sacrifice my position for a link, or just stay number 1 and do without the wikipedia link

    Any thoughts :)
    TIA

I thought someone would mention the no follow tags on Wiki links. Absolutely true - try using the iWebTool visual backlink checker and you'll see that all the external Wiki links are no follow. Go ahead - plug the URLs of a few Wiki articles in and see for yourself.

Wikipedia uses a nofollow attribute...links from wikipedea only brings you traffic...

At the rate it is expanding now, its only a matter of time before your 'niche' is covered in wikipedia by someone. So why not make hay while the sun shines? I suggest you put the article in there with a link to your site as an external link. Beware though, most of the links to external sites from any category in wikipedia are known to last for millisecs only! (unless you have a truly authority site on your niche)

In this situation i think you don't need to write a page on wikipedia. Only place your link on wikipedia when you know it will send you visitors. & don't think of pr juice now :p

I'm actually finding it really easy to get, and keep wikipedia links (probably because the pages are so niche, no one else has covered it yet. There doesn't seem to be a lot of money in my niche, so not much competition either. If you create the page to start with, you don't seem to get so heavily edited). I do get a little traffic from them, and i'm not too worried about pr, just the fact that my position in google will drop when I create the page for it.

I don't know whether the gain in traffic from wikipedia will cover the loss in traffic from loosing my google ranking

yes its true that when someone else writes the page I will not benefit from a link - but in many cases my page is the only one on the net, so i'm not expecting someone else to write the page anytime soon

thanks for your thoughts so far :)

Don't bother with wikipedia. One thing is they really don't like you writing new stuff without citing sources, and they're smart and will catch on if they think you're trying to self promote.

That's exactly right. Most wikipedia pages show up first for a lot of search results so you could end up getting a bunch of traffic, but sadly no google juice. I've got a few links in wikipedia and get some decent traffic.

I was listening to SEO Rockstars.... take their advice and forget about the PR and just take the traffic....or moreso, remove all your links pointing to Wikipedia in an attempt to bring the Wiki down a peg or two...they had a bit of a gripe against the Wiki
