Does Google penalize sites that have backlinks from paid directories? Does it matter if they are strictly paid directories or a combination of paid, free & link exchange directory?

you dont need to worry about penalising as long as you have have a site with good content and you submit to a well maintained spam free directory. it can be free or paid.

I just see directories as a Norm in the web. I don't see any reason why G has to ban our sites, just because we're promoting our sites to attract more visitors. Is there any evil on that?

Regardless of what anyone says here yes google will penalize paid links. The super high PHPBB link that is for sale always is penalized to be worthless PR wise because it's public that they sell links there. It is a well known fact google hates paid links and if they know about the site they will penalize.

    Cheers

Not true at all! Take Yahoo directory as an example. There aremillions of paid links there! You think google will penalize those US$xxx paid links.

Google does not support paid links and encourages natural linking. Of course when there is no editorial integrity google considers it as spam.

If he were only talking about Page Rank this post would make sense.

"Reputable sites that sell links won’t have their search engine rankings or PageRank penalized–a search for [daily cal] would still return dailycal.org. However, link-selling sites can lose their ability to give reputation (e.g. PageRank and anchortext). "

Now, why should I answer about Yahoo's directory when I don't work at google? Google obviously trusts Yahoo as tends to happen with the biggest site on the internet but they will not give some random directory (cough cough your sig) the same benefit of the doubt.

Google actually suggests Yahoo and DMOZ as good places to get a link from.

It's all about trust. Yahoo and Dmoz are a lot different than www.somedirectoryinasig.com

I do not think Google will give a penatly to sites that buy links. Even though they claim this think about this way, even if google could tell that a link was paid for how in the world would they know that me for example was the one that bought the link. If this theroy was true it would be easy for people to get their competors penilized for link buying by simply putting their links on sites that are known to sell links.

However, I do think that google will give a penalty to the sites selling the links because it is easy to know which sites are selling them, but I do not think this applies to directories, directories have always been known to sell links whether they are big or small.

This is very possible. Some directories may not pass PR points, especially when they place links 50 or more on a page.
