Im planning on emigrating to the UK towards the end of this year to the beginning of 2008 and Im wondering what sorts of programming languages, esp web-based ones, are rather popular over there. If I know in advance I know what begin looking at :) So far im teaching myself php and can remember some of the classic ASP i learned in college, though im thinking that it may be advisable to go into something like python or perl :/

Hi mate, depends what you want to do; I specialise in php and make a nice living from it, but as a freelancer, with the open source software packages appearing to be very popular, but as far as employment goes, php is not the best paid language, you would do rather better targetting asp, or C++. As far as I am aware, perl is not a huge demand language, but take a look at the uk job sites (monster.co.uk have quite a good range of tech jobs) and you will get a good feel for demand as far as employed work goes.

PHP and C++ are pretty popular here. Well in North London they seem to be. :)

yeah, ive been asking around with ppl I know there, thanks :) It's encouraging as I'm starting to brush up on my MS SQL 2000 skills as well to assist with MySQL and am starting to teach myself linux (Ubuntu & Gentoo) = win. I suppose I might be able to do a bit of freelance work if I go there as well. How big is the mark for small companies not wanting big websites? Here in South Africa it's pretty large (though the pay isn't that great, you can't charge a lot as they can't afford a lot)

MS SQL is pretty popular too as its a mianly Microsoft DB language so works perfectly with the Office package - which most companies / schools / colleges etc.. etc.. use. :)

That's pretty cool, and good to know :) There weren't many MS SQL job openings in my city when I was looking for a job :( I'll have a look on the business sites to see what sorts of jobs are on offer :)
