Just wondering if this is worthwhile.. Web design aimed at my local market. I live in a small city, I think if I purchased cityname-webdesign.com I could rank in the top 10 SERP. Perhaps put a simple price of $200 per web site with perhaps a $25 recurring fee per year for hosting. Anybody else given this ago? Perhaps to just make a little money every now and then?
I doubt you will bring in much organic business. You may have an advantage if you actively market to your local audience, but in my experience there isn't a lot of business to be gained from raw search traffic for local web development. You may get some business if your city is very large, but still probably not enough to make a business out of it.
Good post. I suppose I need to find out how many times 'mycity web design' is inputted into search engines per day. Like you said, I imagine it probably isn't much, although the financial outlay getting the site ready would be around $15, all I would need is 1 lead.
For the cost, if you're already doing web design, I can see any reason not to do it. It can still give you some good exposure, and the site may end up being popular.
You're not going to get many, if any clients through search engines for local service. It doesn't hurt though to rank well. BUT, your business will prosper if you advertise off the web (flyers, ads, etc.)
I am actually opening a media company in my area I'm going to rank #1 for my town name, which won't be too hard Make up some business cards, brochures etc. Make sure though you don't just give them a website, get some backlinks and rankings happening (atleast for their business name). Also set the site up so they can use it as a revenue tool so they get an ROI rather than just a page saying "hi welcome to our company"
i agree, my main method of attracting customers so far has been through ranking in the top three for my local city in "web design hamilton" and it hasnt been very much... right now its lead to a few clients in the year and a few inquiries but nothing too big, but again all the site costs is the cost of hosting so why not design it and see... one client a year offsets all costs put into it
