I just want to list my site in a few of the best well established directories that carry weight to improve rankings.

    Is there a list?

Kinda off topic but if you look at http://dir.yahoo.com/new/ and assume all yesterdays sites where paid inclusion thats $45488 not including adult sites fees. Wonder why DMOZ dont go paid im sure they could make just as much.

For your site SERPs? Or general SEO?

Usually any high PR backlink would help. That's just basic. Go for a backlink of PR4 +.
