Technorati Tags useless?

Yesterday I wrote the following post titled "Are Technorati Tags Useless?"

* out of the 100 most popular blogs only 7 were using tags in blog posts
* of those who did, 4 were using internal tags (i.e. Tags linking to internal pages)
* only 3 out of 100 were actually using the Technorati Tags (i.e. Linking to Technorati)

The results speak for themselves. If that was not enough I also checked 9 of the most popular SEO blogs on the Internet (you can check the list here). Those guys are supposed to know their way around search engine optimization, and none of them were using the Technorati tags.

Do you guys agree that Technorati tags are just cluttering blogs most of the times?

 

I used to use Technorati tags on some of my blogs but have stopped because they don't really bring in any traffic. Besides, I think tags created by plugins such as ultimate tag warrior are also recognizable by Technorati.

And there's the problem of PR leak using technorati tags, according to some.

Technorati picks up your catagory name's as tags, so it would seem all blogs use tags in some way.

 

They have been good to me. Just for this month according to google Analystics i received 1,414 visits from technorati

 

You use the basis of who is using tags to decide if they are useful? Your assumptions couldn't be more wrong.

 

I pulled 10,000 hits one day testing tags, this is a silly thread.

 

I know my assumptions could be wrong, hence why I decided posting here.

Some people get huge traffic, like "30k Challenge", but it appears to be the exception, otherwise how do you explain that almost none of the top technorati blogs and top seo blogs are not using the tags?

 

The top blog needs extra traffic a whole lot less than a normal blog.

 

I personally think that Technorati tags do not bring much traffic. They should be used only if you have lots of time. Otherwise better things can be done to bring in traffic to your blog.

 

One tag isn't going to do much of anything noticable but tags are easy traffic and they do work.

 

how do you use plugins to auto tags in wordpress ? or maybe some plugins which search tags for you for easy reference ?

 

Techno tags bring in some traffic on a few of my blogs i tdont think they are useless...

 

Technorati is great. I get a good amount of traffic from them.

technorati certainly is a helpful service, but are you sure that the TAGS themselves are bringing you the traffic? have you tested with and without the tags and monitored the statistics to see whether they are working?

maybe for some people they do, but when I removed the tags from my site the technorati traffic remained stable

 

Top 100 bloggers don't need technorati tags to show up in the ranking there, they top technorati anyway.

 

Aaron Wall just wrote a recent article on the subject.
