Why do people use "ur" and other shortenings?

Typing like that actually takes LONGER for me than typing a complete sentence. Come on people... are you really too lazy to type an extra three letters for "you're?" Oh, I forgot -- the apostrophe must take an astonishing .5 seconds to type.

The beginning of the internet was the end of the English language as it was intended to be. ;)

Haha, is it a milestone? 2k posts is NOT a huge deal for me. It's just another number, after all.

Now I had I typed that sentence in "Chat speak," it would have taken me forever ;)

when I chat with my friends in the internet, sometimes I will with u.I have not in the business or chat with my clients in the internet.

This is just the people's custom. It does not matter hower old the people. They may be very busy and it can save the time. Some of the clients sent me the emails with shortenings in the business. It puzzled me at first time.

you should see how some of my friends type in IMs. they didn't only use short hands, already cumbersome...they had to resort to using fancy emoticons that make their messages look like pictionaries. that really gets on my nerve because most of the time those emoticons don't make sense at all and i have to guess at what the other guy is trying to say.

If I have to guess what someone is trying to say, that's my cue to ignore them... permanently. I don't have time to decipher online conversations.

I only talk short like that sometimes with friends, but not with every word or I wouldn't be able to understand what I said myself. On forums like this one I usually just use only "lol". But it is annoying when I request a service or something and someone replies with every word in their sentence shorten. Sometimes it takes me awhile to understand what they said because usually they also leave some words out. It just looks messy.

I'd prefer no one use chat speak at all, but if you're going to use it during personal conversations -- fine. That's one thing.

But whatever you do, DON'T type like that if you are offering a professional service to someone! It lowers your credibility and chances are, you're not going to be taken seriously by anyone.

I used to talk/type like that all the time back in the day from instant messanger and whatnot. I caught myself in highschool even writing out papers with the shortened versions and decided it was finally time to do it right.

my thoughts "r" that it saves alot of time, and naturally the internet has always been very informal, with people not really considering that there talking to real people instead of computers, so they dont take the time and effort neccesary to take pride in what they type. However, there are people out there who do and i raise my glass to you in a toast.
