I'm yet to install this. I purchased a DVD and when I tried to install it gave me errors not sure why. Says files missing! I guess I'll have to replace the DVD. Vista looks really cool.
Just a question, I can install windows vista after XP (in another partition/drive)?

I have Vista on a test machine. Not impressed at all. I dont fancy the GUI so I use the standard classic GUI for the system. EVERY SINGLE system configuration requires twice the "actions" or clicks it did in previous systems. Some things are really mind blowing, it took me a long while to figure out how to change the windows network for the machine. Nothing is intuitive. The firewall and integrity systems are a huge nuisance, I can't believe they didn't come up with a more transparent way to make these things work. As you probably know the system eats up way more system resources

As of now I can't find a single advantage for using it. Simply other than the GUI, that some people might like, there is nothing exciting or of additional value in it.

Well to be honest this used to be the problem with almost all big software (everything) that are heavily promoted before the launch. People think they will be good and purchase them.
Anyways as for as I am concerned I just want to check the interface as I kind of like fancy styles lol. Also I am still waiting for an answer to my question :)

Q: Can I install Vista after windows XP on a seperate drive/parition? (I am too lazy to search right now)

I've tried using Windows vista before but not from my PC. But I think that was just the beta version. It's really cool.

Yes, I am using Win Vista for around one month and I am very pleased with its functionalty and look. Even not all drivers working for the moment, sound, display, network card are all ok compatible with XP.

The single bad element I think it costs lot of RAM and Processor resources but the aero interface really cool.

Vista needs to be installed on a separate partition, disregarding the old operating system. If you try to install on the same partition with the old OS, your old installation will be saved in a folder called Windows.old. The old version of windows won't work anymore.

The second option is to Upgrade, thus, your settings will be preserved.

For the AERO interface you need a min. 128 MB video card.

I've heard that if you don't get the expensive version, it's really no great improvement over XP. A lot of people got free upgrades when they bought computers, but many are only for the basic version. So, from what I've hear it's only worth upgrading if you want to spend the money for the spiffy version. And, as was mentioned, it will supposedly consume a lot of computing resources.

I have used Vista and I do not plan on upgrading our company's computers to it. My computer does not operate better. Programs do not run better. I cannot do more.

There is nothing appealing about the interface nor the new security model. It still does not relieve the user of responsibility for their actions on their machine, though it may trick many into thinking the OS will look out for them. People will still install trojans, and email viruses and key-loggers, blindly clicking through all the permission screens and warnings thrown up by Vista.

At a more basic level, I do not want to waste CPU cycles and RAM on look and feel. I want a working not fashionable computer.

I never upgrade production software that works. I will never upgrade Excel 97, Pagemaker 6.0, or Notetab Pro 4.95. Vista contributes nothing to MySql, PHP, Perl, Apache, or Mercury32. Since 1988, I have only bought two games -- Civ III and Civ IV. So, I cannot be forced to upgrade because of games.

The only thing that might make me willing to upgrade to Vista is if it significantly improves the way Virtual PC and VMs run -- when I upgrade to a CPU with virtualization support.

But, that begs the question: why pay for Vista, when you can get built in VM support with the latest Linux kernel and run older versions of Windows in VMs?

Just notice one thing about this thread. Everyone who didn't install or experience the new system are all saying it's a great system, and the ones who did install and experience it, saying it's worthless, or at least not worth the upgrade.

I speak from no experience with Vista...only what I have read.

Vista is the biggest reason I have bought several books on Linux.

I don't care for what I have read about it. Not the "new features," not the
"digital rights management," and certainly not the cost.

As a matter of course I would never put a new operating system (especially a new one from Microsoft) on any of my computers until it has been in general release for AT LEAST one year. Too many problems with issues, drivers not updated yet by OEMs, etc.

Of course, since I will eventually be "forced" to move to it by the lack of support of previous operating systems (which is understandable...they can't support ALL of their operating systems for all time), I am taking the time now to look at alternatives.

I suspect that someday I will have to have vista on one of my computers...just not anytime soon.

That's true, people usually customize computers following needs and sometimes look. For instance I am working like web designer and I can say a great looking environment for my projects it's a step to succeed. Maybe that's one reason I enjoy Vista.
