I get about 80% traffic from forums with a 1% signup rate. I recently started submitting articles and started a blogg, maybe I get better traffic from there. Also my forum is only about a week old ...

The main drawback of a forum traffic is that it goes until you post.

When you stop, the traffic dies

I get most of my traffic from forums right now. And it is pretty consistant. But I would say there has to be better ways as you "top out" at some point with every forum and trying to keep up enough accounts to really make something happen is time consuming. Targeting related niche forums may get you traffic that sticks around. Untargetted traffic *may* convert better if you run ads - especially if they are general in nature. I guess it all depends on what you consider a "conversion". ;)

I think one of the problems with forums is that after a while lots of the same people will see your signature, and to keep getting interested visitors you may need to sign up somewhere else.

How is forum traffic not targetted? That is only the case if you are posting on inappropriate and irrelevant forums and/or using irrelevant anchor text to your actual site.

If you post in the forums that are related to your website content I am sure you will get alot of " targeted " traffic but if you don't you will get some traffic but not targeted because most of the forum users click on your site link just because they are curious to know how it looks like and its content.

for me, getting traffic from forum is not worth the time spent posting. now that i am well ranked on a number of keywords, google brings me a lot more traffic daily than i could get by posting non-stop on various forums.

so i guess unless you have a specific site, it comes to :

    - if you have low traffic, it's easy to greatly improve it by posting on forums (double, triple...) but it's still "low" numbers
    - once your traffic goes from light to medium or even heavy, posting in forums to attract traffic is gonna be low key. and others will do it for you (for free:) )

For some types of websites, it's very hard to get the right traffic from forums.

It totally depends on HOW TARGETED the forums are that you are posting to. Pay careful attention to your target demographic.

Now that has to be the craziest thing I have read today. I couldn't imagine anyone going to a forum for the sole purpose of learning and sharing. What's the world coming too? :D

Good point Troy. An authentic interest in the subject will be read between the lines. The forum is best used for interaction and information. The traffic is in most cases so neglibable that it shouldnt be the primary focus of your posting.

Forums can drive you traffic but it shouldn't be your sole source of traffic. Many folks that are coming from the forum are curious ones and they don't really end up being your customers. You need to work with the forum posters to collectively help each other to really target the traffic you need - people from outside the forum. Now this won't be the case if your business is really to help webmasters because there are many of them on this forum. So it also depends on the target traffic you are looking for.
