Evenin' guys and gals. Gimme a hand. I bought a faulty but fixable iPod from eBay a couple of days ago, and I'm having a little trouble pinning down exactly what model it is. Y'see, while the serial number would suggest that the unit is a 20GB 3G model, the picture (which looks as if it is of the actual unit being sold) suggests to my inexperienced eye that it's a 4G. The seller, meanwhile, claims that it's an iPod video, but she seems a little dense and as far as I know there has never been released a 20GB iPod video. Anyway, this is the link to the auction picture. This is the info I requested from the seller from the back of the unit: Serial No: JQ403MQUPNT Model No: A1040 Can anyone with a little more knowledge on the subject confirm what it is that I've bought, please? Cheers
That's the item I've bought, Roman That's what I thought, but I can't get past the fact that the serial number comes up in a seach as a 3G (though the unit looks like a 4G). Fixing a faulty hard drive is a little hit and miss, but there's a step by step process (here) for recovering a unit that freezes with the folder and exclamation point icon on the screen. It might not work for me, but for £35 it's worth the risk
So, according to all of the numbers on the back of the unit what I'm getting is a 20GB 3G iPod. Can anyone confirm whether there were any 3G's released that didn't have those 4 buttons running horizontally below the screen? As I say I'm not expert but I though they all had the buttons.
Here is everthing you need to know about your iPod: http://www.apple.com/lae/ipod/specs.html Yours is the M9244. EDIT: One should learn not to post before one know's what one is talking about I have come to the conclusion your iPod is a 20gb 4th generation iPod with no video.
Thanks for the link, Roman All I can assume now is that the picture on the auction isn't a picture of the model I'm getting (unless anyone else can shed any light on the design differences).
Based on the pic it's a 4G, based on model number it's a 3G, guess you're not any closer to figuring it out.
Nope I just emailed the seller to ask her, but I don't think I'll get much useful information because 1) she seems a little stupid if her messages to me are anything to go by and 2) she already claimed that the iPod is a video version with a colour screen, which it clearly isn't. I can't decide whether she was trying to cheat me or whether she's just one of those people who like to avoid straining their brains by using them Anyway, it doesn't really matter at the end of the day. I only need something to entertain myself during an 8 hour flight to the US in a few weeks, and I also bought an Archos AV320 video player yesterday so even if the iPod is only a 3G I'll still get both music and video (assuming I can fix it).
