MAC or PC?

So I'm thinking about buying a new computer. My current PC is around six years old: processor speed of 1.15ghz with 256 DDR ram and a NVIDIA Geforce2 MX 200 32MB. To put it simply, it sucks.

Well, not entirely. I occasionally play games and for that it sucks but that's not that big of a deal. I basically use my computer to work on my websites, talk to friends, surf and to write and store my documents. I always told myself I wouldn't bother upgrading until it was absolutely unusable. However, I have been looking into a Mac, and am really considering buying one. I've heard they are much more stable than PC's, which is an obvious attraction for me. I don't do a lot of video work, which I also heard is terrific on a Mac, but that's a plus anyway. (if I wanted to learn more)

Just wondering what you guys think. Anyone here own a Mac? Are you happy with it and would you recommend it? The price tag would be around $2,500 off Apple's site.

This isn't the typical question. I provided what I'd be using it for to see what people thought I should go with. Not something I can exactly search, plus things change. I want an up to date response.

    Thanks.

I was more or less in the same position as you a few months ago. I took the plunge, bought a Mac, and I'm super happy with it, not regrets at all. I just have these suggestions:

    - Get a normal mouse with scroll button. I just can't go without the extra buttons
    - buy from Apple's recertified section of their site. You get a full warranty, and save a couple hundred bucks
    - use NeoOffice (a port of OpenOffice) instead of buying MS Office

I bought a MacBook, but in all honesty I wish I'd gone with a MacBook pro. I did upgrade the ram, so that helps significantly, 512 just wasn't enough

As far as Office goes, I actually use Google docs for just about everything. However, if I have to work on something locally or when there's no wifi, I use NeoOffice

If you want to play games stay away from a Mac.

I got a Mac about 6 months ago, after using a PC for over 10 years. It takes a bit of getting used to.

IMO Dell PC is the best way to go for general internet webmastering.

I think Apple's products is a little bit overestimated IMO. If you want anything other than windows, then you can install a linux distro, takes you 5-10 minutes and costs 0.5$ for the boot-CD you need to burn.

I highly recommend Mac. I have used Macs for 20ish years (whenever the 1st Mac came out, my mom bought it) and have been increasingly happy with each new Mac I get. I have also spent my fair share of time on PC's, so I'm not Mac-bias, PC's are just so clumsy and awkward compared to the sleek sophistication of Macintosh.

I get all of my Mac's at maczone.com. Cheaper then Apple.com and they always give you all sorts of extras (RAM, software, printers, etc) too. :)

    Thanks for the responses!

I rarely play games on my PC, maybe twice a month if that. I read that certain games run fine on the Mac so perhaps it'll be best for me. (cause even if they don't, it really doesn't matter cause I don't game often.

Thanks for the link to Maczone. I had found it earlier but didn't know if they'd be reliable but I guess they are if you're using them. ;)

I love PC and can't wait for Windows Vista. I bought a iMac intel once, brand new from John Lewis. I just didn't get on with it and after spending rediculous amount of money for it I still had to buy all of my games and software in Max version so I wasn't too happy. I sold it after and got myself a high powered pc for lower than the cost.

I know it's what inside that counts but still my pc runs just as fast and smooth as the mac I had bought.

I love my Macs. I was a power PC user and builder for over a decade before switching. I did so, because of OSX. Also, Macs are used predominately in higher education, media companies, etc.

As has been said, if you're a gamer, go with Windows. Some guys you want might be on it, but many aren't. Macs more of a professional tool.

I'm typing this on a PowerBook.

I've always used a mac since the first Apple computers. They are better machines and generally give less trouble for the most part.

I have a windows computer that I use to test website layouts on. With the new Intel macs, you can use http://www.parallels.com/ or http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/ to run Windows if you really need it. You'll find that people who use macs always recommend them. It's the odd person that seems to switch back to Windows. Usually because they don't want to put in the effort to learn the new system and can't get used to it. Good luck with your decision.

I'm typing this on my MacBook Pro with two Gigs of RAM. I would never go back to PCs.
