Just caught a Thief!

I was just about to go to bed, but I decided to empty the trash. I saw someone walking through my neighborhood. It's just after 5, so I thought it was wierd - we've had car break-ins, a stolen car, garage break-ins, and a shitload of stolen mail in the last few months.

I quietly went through my side gate and slowly walked around the cars in the driveway. Sure enough, I watch the guy open my mailbox and take all the mail out and put it in his shirt.

I ran after him, stopped him, got the mail back. Then I told him to get lost and then ran inside and called the police.

I opted not to tackle and restrain him because a) it's 5:00 in the morning and I'm tired; and b) I have kids and I don't want them to wake up or see their dad in a physical altercation. It also would have required me to scream for help to get someone to call the cops and that would have at the very least woken my kids up, and I think they would have been the only ones to hear me.

That's awful - but nice one for catching him. I used to live on a housing estate that had three large waste bins for 12 flats and we had mail thieves all the time. Once we started shredding all our mail - even the junk mail - the thieves got annoyed and set fire to the bins instead. Did the police say they'd do anything?

About 5 years ago we had a snow storm that started about 1 in the morning and I looked out the window and saw a couple people looking suspicious. About an hour later I looked out to see the snow and saw the same people again, one of whom darted into a neighbors yard. I called the police and they nailed the guys. Turned out they were stealing parts from a classic car the heighbor owned.

The police shot through my neighborhood minutes later at a crazy speed. With the amount of stolen mail in our neighborhood, they take it seriously. They actually raided a house down the hill two months ago and busted a bunch of mail theives. That was a day after my neighbor found my mail 3 blocks away when walking her dog.

I guess where you live you have those classic mail boxes that anyone can access. Here in the UK we don't have lazy postmen and they walk up the door and deposit the goods into our property. Makes nicking it that much more difficult.

We love the Royal Mail...

And yet for all the work they do, there are fat tabby's who go for the postman's hand as he puts his hand in .

umm. lot of house has big front lawn in US. It is really a waste of time to come in and get out.

but it is ture postman are lazy here. There are three floor in my apartment and we have a mailbox for each floor. However, the guy never seperate the mail, he just stuck everything in one box. If it is full, he left it on the floor:mad: .

Sue the mailman for trespassing. He has no business inside the property. As if you need to stick your hands *through* the hole to deposit the mail. Go pussy!

I have a buddy who's husky actually took out the mail slot to get to the postman. Every day she was at the front window waiting for him. After the mail slot incident they had to get a mailbox out front - which was a better solution because they started to get their mail intact.
