I'm pretty sure this question has been debated before, but can someone tell me if by me linking to other websites, will raise my page ranking in search engines.

I might be wrong, but as far as I know if you have a good outgoing link on you article to another site with the same topic as your article is written about your page will gain importance.

Yes, I believe it bumps up the quality ranking of your page. Personally, I haven't got around to doing it yet and I think my ranking is suffering. Part of my website relates to another well known website. I rank about 100 for the keyword despite having a ton of content. I think a link to their website would more strongly associate me with the keyword.

Pagerank and SERP are two different things

Links out do nothing for PR
Links to relative sites (preferably those ranking in top 10 for your keywords) help you improve

    Not at all!
If you can raise your pr by doing that ,I believe that many sites would have good PR already!

Live PR and/or toolbar PR cannot be raised by outgoing links. Just try to think at this as you could create a link farm for 10s of 1000s of links. Would that make your page important ? No .. just a dumpster .. :D

    Regards

In case there is a misunderstanding about my previous post. I did not mean to imply that an outgoing link improves your PageRank. I do not believe that. What I do believe is that it is helpful to have an outgoing link to authority sites. I think it creates a relationship between your site and the authority that is helpful in a couple of ways.

    1. It helps the search engines better understand the theme of your page.
    2. It improves the trust search engines place in your content.

I have a way to find out. I have linked two pages to a prominent website that those pages are related to. I have not added a link on my homepage, because I don't want potential visitors sent there. My homepage currently ranks 112 for their keyword on Google, but the two pages are the homepages (directory menu) for the actual content. The two pages I have added the link to currently rank at 360 and 747+. I will keep you posted as to what (if anything) happens.

Relevant outbount links help Google to 'theme' a site which can help with rankings.

Outbound links themselves don't help with PR though, if they did everybody would be linking to Google ;)
