Religious reasons aside, consuming pork or the meat of any conscious being is unnecessary when we have an alternative: plants. A pig has a nervous system, a brain & can perceive pain... plants don't.
Not true. Doing what you are told to do by scripture isn't morality, it's obedience. Morality comes from your sense of right & wrong (conscience), which is formed over time from your own experiences.
I am not into eating people. But I did just enjoy a bbq-ed rib-eye, dry rubbed, with a side creamed spinach (a nice potato leek soup to start), and a beer on ice. I must really like the stuff because it is 32 degrees outside and for this neck of the woods thats about a darn record. I am now enjoying an extra peaty scotch.
Go to some countries where religion reigns supreme and you will find it to be sad and dreary. Watch this short presentation of some facts of the society we have created and it is easy to describe our current world as sad and dreary.
Q: Why is Pork considered 'unclean' ...? A: because pigs EAT their own SHIT! (this is not a joke) about the religious part... I don't know... I'm a orthodox, and we are very good friends with pigs especially around Christmas
I think you will find humans will eat their own shit if they have to... I have seen my dog scoop up one of his 'fresh out the oven' turds and enjoy it. Shit is used to feed plants and vegetables, its full of godly goodness. I'm sure noah fed some shit to the animals on his ark, it just makes sense
That video is mostly about economic differences. If you think that the world is sad then that's probably because you're not used to the medium living conditions. Actually, the world is much better of today than for 100 years ago. But it has a good message within it. That we should be appreciate what we have.
Sorry for the snip. Wanted to reply specifically to this part. Pardon. "A sadder and drearier place" better?
Yeah. See I thought I saw that coming, but I thought I'd give him the benefit of the doubt, and posted in my relatively optimistic way. I don't view the world as a sad and dreary place. He does... while it's anecdotal evidence, and therefore worth barely more than a plug nickel, this supports my theory that a lack of religion leads to things being bleak and dreary, or "bleaker and drearier" depending on if one believes that things are already bleak and dreary or not. On the other hand, I fully support the notion that the government controlling religion, or visa versa, twists both the government and the religion into something very not-nice. And this is one reason why I don't want my government running my religion, or my religion running my government.
Anyone ever smell fertilizer spread out on land. Isn't that to grow stuff? What about mulch? Isn't that essentially - the dead. But this is just going round and round. Muslims won't eat pork and that's a good thing - keeps the prices down for the rest of us. They cook up lamb pretty good though.
I didn't say I thought the world was sad and dreary. You said you thought the world would be a sad and dreary place without religion, I was just saying that for some people the world is sad and dreary. But I do agree that believing in a religion or some other supreme theory can add value to some people lives. It may give them hope in times of distress etc. But religion too often branches out and manisfests itself in very negative ways. But I guess religion to the individual can be seperate from the organised religion that tries to invade peoples lives. So if you believe your world is a better place because of religion then who am I to dispute that, I'm sure it is. But I don't think the world in general is a better place due to it. I agree. Religion needs to be kept under control.
Yeah, them Soviets were just a barrel of laughs, eh? A-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA!!! Talk about sad and dreary!
Right, I completely agree. This makes it impossible to judge anyone else - even if they have bodies buried in the back yard. By this statement, even Ted Bundy and Adolph Hitler were moral and upstanding citizens! After all, they had experiences, and lots of time to have them! What part of not killing, stealing, taking another man's wife, etc., do you find to be *morally* relative? (note: I'm not specifically talking 10 commandments here) This only shows that moderation is dead. You speak a tale of two extremes. (as is such with most every aspect of life) Substitute the word "religion" for any word of your choosing and it starts to make more sense. Hey, Mr. Orthodox - ever been around chickens or turkeys? These are "clean" animals. Know what they like to eat a lot of? I'll give you a hint - it's plant based, and twice baked! Good grief. As if a Jew needed any bad publicity, you have to go and be an asshole. I don't observe Christmas, but that comment was totally tasteless, no matter where your beliefs lie.
Everyone has their own sense of morality, there's no doubt about that, individuals like the ones you mentioned however are not judged in comparison with what the Bible teaches but on widely accepted contemporary standards of moral conduct. Proof of this is that many things that the Bible teaches are illegal today & widely considered to be morally reprehensible.
isnt the real reason to prevent disease? same as the Jewish prohibition vs shell fish? both, if not prepared properly can be hazardous to your health.
