I've been reading reports that new sites do well in google initially, and they they seemingly fall off. How can I get new sites out of this void?

I have heard new sites are put in a sandbox, and the only thing that gets your site out of the sandbox is time itself. While you are waiting it out, it is a really good time to get lots of inbound links, and optimize your main site, and all the internal webpages with effective keywords.
A new site I put together last summer seemed to have to wait for about 4 months until the site was out of the sandbox, and started seeing some results from Google.
    Good luck!

not to rain on your parade, but I had the same thing and then one day "poof" out of the index. but it takes about3-4 months to come out and you will. Consider this Google's test drive. When you go into the sandbox (and most people do) it the time to work on your site, trade links etc...then you can yell you're back (and you will be ) in a few months....am I rambling again....hmmm...anyway it worked for me :p

You might find traffic from Google will be sproadic for your blog. I have found this to be true with my blog. I will get lots of traffic for a few days, then nothing for a week, and my blog has been online for almost two years.

    What about a news blog with 10-12 articles/day ?
Should that be sandboxed? And would it be?

One day I was ranking for great keywords ... next day nothing !

I don't think it matters what subject your blog is based on, it will still get sandboxed. I find with my blog, I will get lots of visitors from the search engines for a few days, then suddenly, hardly any visitors for a few days, then it goes back to getting visitors. It is like my blog is allowed to be out of the sandbox for a while, then put back in, for no apparent reason.
I would suggest, keep writing interesting articles on your news blog, and don't worry about getting visitors from the search engines, as you have little or no control
You could always try optimizing your blog for the keywords you are going after, and I would suggest doing this with the IBP-9 SEO program (see link on my signature).

Right, I have absolutely feeble traffic, Google seems totally disinterested in anything I have to say to the Internet, despite submitting sitemaps and all the rest.

Basically I am not going to give up - making sure there is tons of original content means Google can't sandbox you indefinitely, surely!!

If you haven't done this already, try and get lots of inbound text links to your blog from other blogs and websites. Within the text links, try and ensure the same keywords you have optimized your site with, are included in the text of the link. Include an interesting description, and hopefully, you will start getting hits from the inbound links.
Getting links installed on other sites and blogs is, perhaps, the most difficult taks to do, and a naturally placed link is probably the best (where a link is placed to your site from another, highly ranked and popular site, and the link to your site is included as a reference, like an interesting news article.

Google is apparently, changing the algos, and is reindexing all sites every two days, or so I have read. So hold on, your blog might suddenly get lots of visitors from Google, and then again, maybe not....who knows?

The best way to get out of the Sandbox in my opinion is to use deep linking strategies with blogs i.e. you put a summary of content that is on your site on your blog, and then place a link to your blog post on your site. You will then end up with two deep links on the SE's - one from the blog and one from your site

The problem is SE's tend to favour sites that have been around for a while, and which have new original fresh content. This is why new sites sometimes quickly drop in the rankings, because the content hasnt changed, and therefore other sites will come up higher as being more relevant

Content is king online, and therefore if you dont add new fresh content often, your site might slip down the rankings by a huge margin. however if you have a blog website and set it up correctly, your home page always be different everytime you make a new post

Do "mutual" links kind of cancel each other out where PR is concerned? Seems to me Google might well rank a site higher if there is a one-way link from an "authority" site.More kudos, surely? What you mention above would be an example of this, wouldn't it?

After tinkering with different setups, I have definitely opted to have my main page always show the latest blog entry, even though it is a bit messy for someone coming in via a top-level link. So I have ensure that my About pages are clearly navigable from this page.

About new sites etc., some people claim that their brand spanking new site has shown up on the SE's within milliseconds of being published, but it does actually make sense to me that Google et al should weight more established sites with frequently-refreshed content, as opposed to upstart sites like mine :) It's motivation to keep working at the quality and the content too...

I have a Google conspiracy theory about this> Google makes its $$$billions$$$ with Google AddWords so I think they have a system where they give newcomer websites a chance to tastes of success and the potential of getting visitors. Once you have the idea and see the big picture they drop your website's ranking and the visitors don't bring you organic business and profit anymore so they lead you to start a Google AddWords campaign and keep Google making $ for their greedy investors.

Once your site has mature backlinks you will be out of the sandbox. Another way to get out of the box is with google adwords.
