Hi guys! This is my theory.. Many companies are contracting SEO expert to rank better in Google, right? If you look around a few years ago, this position not existis... right now if you check dice.com, there are many positions available .... OK Think.... if you are CEO of a big company or owner of a small retail, where you need to pay around 70 to 100K yearly for a SEO expert or $XXXX for keyword, etc etc, today, this is HIGHT risk, why? because your website could be live for 4 days, then your site leave Google, then 4 day back, then 7 days disappear. Remember a retailer or company need to sell every time..... As CEO you can say, OK I will buy Adwords, and it could be part of the product’s cost. Remember sometime store’s sellers earn around 3 to 5% of sell, Adwords is cheaper thant it.... Now, Why Google creates new words like rererefresh, overrefhesh, refresh boy, dc comic refresh, and many more... easy The 80% of the profit of Google come from Adwords, Ops! Here is, why they should help your website "FREE", Google is not more two university boys trying to do something for their graduation! They need money for their shareholders. If you think, it is right! I understand them.... Google webmaster blog say nothing, only about duplicate content... LOL funny and very basic. Google is like a "monopoly" of the "search engine" or we can say "Adwords engine" I know, I will get much less visits, but I will start to optimize my websites for MSN and Yahoo! Actually, your theory isn't that bad.. I've been thinking the same, to be honest! Google manipulates the search data to make more money from adwords.. Damn, Google is evil..

Google is the number 1 search engine because they return the best results. I can get a spammy and crappy page to rank relatively easy in Yahoo and MSN. As soon as they stop returning the best results they stop being the number on Search Engine, they would be a fool to risk that. stop complaining about Google. If it was easy and google allowed crappy sites with copied content written in english that can barely be understood. what kind of reputation would it have? Google doesn't owe any of us anything.

Interesting theory, but do you know how to optimize for Yahoo or MSN? I'd love to know - I get ~200 visits a day (to the site in my sig) from Google, but only 5 from Yahoo and MSN combined.

All search engines like custom, original content that is on topic and relevant to your site's topic. SEO is what it is - search engine optimization. Optimize for Google only and you will get most of your traffic from Google, for now. Target the other engines and you will get more traffic from them.
Your theory looks good. We never know. If that is not the case, I doughty their competency. They probably tried to out smart the New SEO gurus poping up and did not quite get how to do it. And ended up in a mess, they can't clean. F**d up PR update, F**d up back links. 3rd option is too much money and the booze made them sober. Time for the new Search engine. .
The thing is, I don't think google cares much because when they have sites losing rankings they will have others replacing them. To the search engine user, all they care about is that they get some good info. I know the webmasters that get affected will feel differently, but to the user, its all the same.
I am not a fan of the theory for reasons also sited above. To say that Google waters down its serps is like saying that maxim magazine is going to stop printing hot chicks as not to take away from their advertisements. The analogy isn't perfect, but its the same idea: Advertising space. Advertising space is only worth something if the content which that space is contained in get viewers, or as the crazies in the industry call it "eyes." If Google didn't strive to be the best, someone else could swoop up underneath them and be best. They would get the most "eyes" and then get the most ads. This is exactly what happened to American Car manufacturers. In the 70s and 80s American car manufacturers created an inferior product so that people would have to buy cars more frequently. What happened next? The Honda Accord became the most popular car in America for like 15 years. The quality of the SERPs may not pay the bills, but they are the main reason why the bills get paid, and you don't pay Executives millions every year if they don't know that.

I'm not going to get into my feelings about the subject, but keep one thing in mind: Google has only one objective and that is to make its shareholders happy. Google is not the altruistic goody two-shoes that some people think it is. The only thing that matters is the bottom line. That being said, Google is still my favorite search engine - for now.
