Turning A Hotlinked Image Into A Backlink?

Discussion in 'Link Development' started by adleym, Jan 14, 2007.

    Hey everyone
I have noticed a lot of sites hotlinking to animated gifs on my site. Which is fine, lack of bandwidth isn't really an issue for me yet. But is there a way I can automatically turn one of these gif images into a live link?

Simplest answer is always the best... How about emailing them and asking?

Just contact them and tell them that you don't mind, but if they could put a link back to your site, that's would be nice.

I did it, and many of them gave me a link. Other removed the hotlink.

It's not automatic, but it's work.

I think its actually a great way get links.

    • You create some kickass image, or controversial image
    • it spreads
    • You do a yahoo link search for the image URL in Y!
    • Email all of the webmasters that stole your image
    • Find a page of theirs you want a link on and kindly ask for it.

You could end up getting some quality backlinks that way. Much quicker than with article or directory submissions, its a one-way link, and you can choose a quality relevant page.

Its like a link exchange only not conventionally trackable by G

You could also watermark your URL. Not that you'd build backlinks, but at least create some awareness if the photo becomes popular
