How can I convert my camcorder videos?

    Hi

I have a Sony DV Digital Handycam camcorder, and I would like to put my files on dvd.

When I use windows movie maker to copy the files to my harddrive, I tend to use DV-AVI format. That way I am sure to not lose any quality. On the other hand, I am afraid that I might be recording at a too high resolution. I am not sure that the camcorder actually records at 25MB/s anyway, so why should I save at that?

Anyway, I would like to retain the quality of DV-AVI but compress the video. Currently, a single 40 Minute video file is an amazing 7 Gigabytes!

Can I use divx or xvid or something to keep the quality and compress it (at least so that I can fit it on a dvd disc)?

    Thanks

    Zach

I just got finished loading my DV tapes to DVD. I imported them into pinacle and burned them to a DVD. They turned out very well! Pinnacle cost me about 100 bucks. By the way, 60 minutes of video on a regular DVD.

No loss of quality or "droped frames". Most of the videos were a little less than 60 minutes and fit nicely on a dvd. I thought it worked very well. I will go back later and put them together in edited home movies. I am currently building a video from this past year. Something I really enjoy. Good luck.

i used to copy it to HD then burn, now i bought a standalone dvd recorder (you can get one for about $140 now!) and i just plug my cam into the dvd recorder, hit record and it burns it right to disk with no loss of quality, extra time spent, or conversion hassles. :)

Pinnacle is up to about 10.5 now. My neighbor uses adobe premeire pro and he took an old VHS and put it on DVD for me. He has a REALLY high powered computer. Cost him somewhere in the neighborhood of 8 g's.
