If you are going to make another google its ok to be short.
If you are going for night having keywords in domain name helps.
    .com domains should be preffered.
    eg niche
    handmadecarpet.com <- good
    Also buy
    hand-made-carpet.com <-very good
for spreading the word say handmadecarpet.com
submit hand-made-carpet.com to the search engines.
for internal links in the site use hand-made-carpet.com
just my suggestion. Please correct me if I am wrong.

For all purpose com, short and brandable as already stated.

However, it's more likely you can't find such gem, or it might take either time or money getting a real good one.

There are many factors involved when it comes to buy a domain name.

If you are going to develope an awesome idea, any extension might work and some could be as good as com, in example show.tv, money.biz, genealogy.name and so on.

Although com, net, org, info, biz, ws, name, cc, tv and some cTLD are among the popular extensions, there is no reason why you can't have a successful domain name with other extension if you work hard in marketing.

Be prepared to get your email address spammed after you file it with the domain registration.

The truth about reg email addresses being spammed has come to me a while back.. I even used a newly created account when registering a domain name, and it worked, in about 1 month I started to get new mail even though I was not using that address for anything else. More and more websites offering whois service upgrade their engines to cloak email addresses, yet our personal details is still under threat.

I'm against anonymous registrations myself since I'd never fully trust a website that runs on a non-transparent domain name.
