I'm coming off a dedicated server, which is actually pretty nice, but I'd like the added benefit of RAID'ed drives and room to grow, and perhaps a more reasonable price. I moved to another webhost, and it's not really doing it for me at the moment. I need a host, preferably one of these "clustered" hosts, but with mysql that you can actually connect to 100% of the time, and fast page load times. And not just for static content, fast load times for php + mysql. I talked to one host, asked them for example sites so I could watch them for a while. About half the ones I went to were intermittently unable to connect to mysql. Completely ridiculous... I have a price range in mind, but it's flexible. Anyone know of a decent place??? Mosso looks alright, but no SSH is a real pain. Thanks a lot!
What benefit are you looking to gain from having RAID'ed drives? Are you looking for shared web hosting now? You won't find a host that can offer 100% uptime (in reference to SQL connect).
I'm looking to not have to upload 30g of stuff when an HD dies Hopefully it will fail to over to a mirror until they can replace it. I suppose, yea, shared hosting would be alright so I thought, the few I have seen aren't impressing me. Maybe something else if it is <= $100. Do all shared hosts have these SQL problems? I mean, I don't need 100% or 99.9999%... but several times a day for extended periods of time is ridiculous. So are 40-60 second page loads. =)
Yeah, you should probably stay on dedicated if I were you. You're going to get that with most shared hosting plans just because most companies overload their servers. I went with LiquidWeb for dedicated+managed hosting and I get 50gb nightly backups. You could look for something like that or for something like what we have with our server, we have a 200gb backup on our other hardrive (We have 2 hdds) some things to think about.
Thanks. It would be nice if there was a middle ground, like "hey... i don't feel like running my own dedicated server, but I don't wanna pay $2.99/month for crap service either... how about $100 on one of these 'clustered' or 'grid' setups and I actually get what I pay for".... oh well, I may have to stay dedicated if no one else knows of a decent middle ground.
Check out HostDrive.comhttp://hostdrive.com We would be happy to RAID out any of our dedicated boxes for no additional charge. We have several available currently, all ready to go. We have several to choose from. If you are interested shoot me an email off list (jer@mia.net)
The main thing is, I could go with a vanilla install, but I'd still have to maintain it... etc. Which I'm getting pretty tired of doing. Has anyone here tries mosso or netfirms? I think whoever runs digpagerank is on mosso, I think they are a member here? Mosso has no shell access, which blows once you get used to editing pages with vim over ssh or something. And netfirms has a lot of bad reviews, anyone have recent experience with either?
Well, I'd stay with dedi box if I were you. Anyway, mediatemple is worth considering if you want clustered setup. http://mediatemple.net/webhosting/gs/
I've got 9 dedicateds from www.liquidweb.com right now and have no issue at all with SQL loading instantly. I've got Enterprise 2 plan if you were wondering.
Yes, I love it! www.hostdrive.com is the best host I've been on. It's pretty much all the benefits of dedicated hosting without any of the hassle, which is exactly what I was looking for. And, as MIA told me, they do not over load their servers. Speaking of which, I don't wanna slam MediaTemple, because I think they have some good features, but if you have a site that uses any PHP at all, I would ask to see a lot of example sites before I signed up and moved domains. I would watch those domains, not just on the weekend, but on several week days over a period of time. This is a graph, sure most of you are familiar with it, google webmaster page load time graph, this illustrates my switch to MT :
One I personally use and suggest to anyone is the one I have in my sig. They offer cheap prices, great service, and 99.9% up time.
