Hi I im making a new site at www.seo.dd-soft.com and the cms system im programming is creating html pages dynamically. so my question is, how would you prefer to name files. ex. 1. www.yoursite.com/1/default.aspx 2. www.yoursite.com/1/a-long-descriptive-url-name.html well, the argument for using the long filename is to rank for those keywords in the filename, but maybe google doesn't like long filenames??? any comment on this???
Well I wouldn't get them too long.. but U should certainly make the best use of them wherever possible... I also make use of the directory structures that some with many CMS applicatoins ( we use Joomla on all of our sites) For example from one of my sites; http://www.reliable-seo.com/knowledge-base/technical_seo/phrase_based_optimization.html I have covered more than a few KW/Phrases in the naming conventions of not only the PAGE name the the directory naming conventions as well
there's no problem with long name. It is good for SEO but it may not be good for online users. (that's my experiment on my video sites)
A descriptive URL definitely helps Don't be too concern on the length thou.. just make sure the filename summarize the content.
thanks all, sure helped. and thegypsy: yes I have also been looking at Joomla a couple of times now, I have tried to make my own cms system with asp.net ands it works okay, but i cant make it as flexible as Joomla, so I think I may try it again soon.
Well if/when U do... there are 3 components to add.. SEF Friendly URLs ; though it ships with a rudimentary system, you need to upgrade SEO Patch - there is an SEO patch for Joomla for Page Titles etc... Meta Tag Generator - more for managing the meta tags... the generator aspect sucks Feel free to PM me.. I also own a web development company that does a ton of Joomla Development -- so I have a bit of experience with it ( as well as SEO obviously)
he he...that was FREE help BTW in case ya thought I was flogging my company - he he I generally help out fellow board members where possible
