No, the caste system in existence today doesn't function like that. Anyone born into any class has an equal shot at pursuing a successful life, hell the people born into "lower classes" have "reservations" in educational institutions & government jobs to their advantage. Such reservations are widely misused & claimed by people who don't really need them, just because they happen to belong to a particular "lower caste". The caste system does play a huge role in arranged marriages & in the "social status" of the people who believe in & retroactively encourage this crap. What sucks most is that the government recognizes the existence of castes rather than deny & work toward abolishing them. And when an Indian (generally) says "middle class", he/she means the financial middle class. While it is likely that most Hindu Indian members here on digitalpoint are of the financial middle class, I am sure there's a lot of "caste diversity" so to speak among the Hindu members. The Hindu caste system mainly consists of four classes/castes, namely (from highest to lowest) "Brahmins"(the elite priests, scholars), "Kshatriyas"(warriors), "Vaishyas"(traders, farmers), & "Shudras"(laborers, servants). They date back to more than 2000 years ago, at which time they were said to have been strictly enforced. Historically, there existed a 5th class, the untouchables (Dalits), who have now been liberated. India had it's first Dalit president K. R. Narayanan who took office in 1997.
