Are any directory owners willing to disclose exactly or roughly how much they make from their directory. either from ads or submissions?
A newbie asking a question about money - let me guess, your thinking of starting your own directory or your trying to decide if it would be profitable to start a paid directory? I think the answer - how much do we make from directorys.... quite simply never enough
1. There are already too many directories. 2. Most people make no money at all with their directory. Try building quality content, not polluting the internet with more crap directories.
My directory "makes" by back hurt from sitting in my computer chair. "Makes" my eyes hurt from staring at my computer screen. ...and most recently I have developed a callus on my mouse finger from my directory submitter software. Last but not least it "makes" my girlfriend mad because she says I spend more time with my directory/websites than her. edit: Forgot to add the most important item my wallet, it's about 1400.00 dollars lighter in 8 days.
We started Cyberbilt in June '06. We've made $0.77 USD. That's taking all revenue and subtracting hosting, advertising (including featured submissions), paypal fees, and the script. Funny because when I initially looked at the total revenue (first of course), I was pretty pleased. But when it came time to total the expenses it was a different story. I guess we're still in the GREEN though...barely
The directories at the bottom run of the market make no money, he high end directories probably make a few thousands but when you talk of REALLY big directories like yell.com them make millions of pounds evey year but they have hundreds of sales people.... inclusion also cost about £300 (almost $600 ) per year. But you will probably not find a rep of yell at this forum
Agree the more work you do the more luck you will get No work, No Luck The top Directory Owners all work hard providing support and marketing etc, then the revenue will start to come in
If you cant afford to make a very popular directory, make a reputation for yourself. Ways you can show your fellow members/buyer that you are not a directory scammer: Never ever remove free listings that had been offered when directory was launched. Never remove paid listings. Never sell of your directory as soon as it gets a PR. Always have a backup done. Make it sure if you have sold a link for 10$ a yr and even if your site become PR5-6 never remove the links. So in this way you may not be making a very very popular directory, but atleast you have a directory wherein someone may buy a link with a little confidence. And incase you decide to make a quality directory, follow what some of our popular members like Ask, Britishguy, Anon, Mytikmedia, Jeff, Amit, Jim, etc have done. The first step to make a directory is never to think of its revenue and hence I never stated it in my abv thoughts (warning:they maybe crap though).
You should better concentrate on building quality websites then filling the Internet with directories that stay up for 1 year then go offline because owner realizes it is not so easy to make the first million dollar as he first dreamed Regards
