Choosing host

    Hello!
I've been searching the web and this forum for tips on good hosts. I've found bluehost .com and godaddy .com. And I like bluehost the most. But I don't really know about godaddy, beacuase it seems like I won't choose a hosting system for godaddy, only the domain.

What I would like to have is a host witch gives me the possiblity to add some domains (unlimited would be nice) to the same account, where I can use a lot of PHP/MySQL pages. I want to be able to use CMS made simple, and thinking about doing a directory too. The reason I'm telling that I want to use MySQL and PHP to maybe more than one page is that I've seen hosts witch only supports one MySQL database, and I would like to have the posibility to add lots of php sites with a MySQL database.

So to make a long story short, I would like a host that suports multiple domains and with few limits in the php/MySQL development.

Do you know of any, that you could recommend?

    Thanks,
    Kalle :)

If you have the $$ I'd strongly suggest going with a VPS right off the bat.
So far I'm happy with servint.com wasn't so happy with powervps.com but it might work for you.

Seemed nice, but a bit expensive.

Checked dreamhost, and it is unbelievable. The cheapest package has everything that I could ever dream of ;)

But I have one question. There were no unique IP adresses for this package. What are they used for? Do I need unique IP adresses for making multiple sites at the same account, or what are they for?

    Thanks,
    Kalle :)

You can get separate and unique IP address for each domain hosted in one account in exchange of a small fee (less than $4 per month).

Ok. Isn't it possible to have multiple domains otherwise? And if it is possible, what is the other benefits of a unique IP?

Is there a way to undo stupid posts? ;) I found the following at their own homepage:

You can have multiple domains in one acc. But if you need a separate IP for your domain then you can pay for that.

If its a shared IP and its blacklisted due to spamming, then all accounts using the shared IP may have problems sending/receiving emails as filters may mark the emails as spam.

Ok, so if I understand it right, all the domains without a unique IP adress will stay under the same, shared, IP.

If anyone of the users of this IP abuses it and gets blacklisted, I will get blacklisted too. So if I instead buy one unique IP adress, I can have all my sites there, and no risk of getting blacklisted (if I don't do anything wrong myself ;)).

    Another related question:

Is it possible to buy cheap domains at a domainselling page, and transfer them to this account? Do you know the prices for transfering, in that case?

    Thanks,
    Kalle :)

I dont know much about it. Though recently I bought one domain from a fellow DP member in namecheap and transfered it to my dreamhost account and within 48 hrs its started working. I just modified the nameservers and that's all. But it'll be better ask them to clear off your doubts.

Most hosting companies do provide you with unique IPs up to a point - after that all the rest of your domains will be on a shared IP.

As for domains - buy them where ever you feel comfortable and then just redirect them to your host by changing the DNS settings. I have domains from several different registrars - I just keep a spreadsheet of domain names, registrars and expiration dates to keep track of them.

If you have a shared IP and notice that the IP is blacklisted from one of the other domains usually you can report it to the provider and change IP but this is not a generic rule. It depends on how cooperative is your provider

I read out there that the worst five hosting services are:

    1. 1&1
    2. GoDaddy
    3. Hostgator
    4. Dreamhost
    5. Ipower

I have not tried any of them though

If you want a 'cheap' provider that has good uptime and support try the following.

    http://www.pro-net-hosting.com/

I recently got rid of them simply because I did not need them anymore, service, uptime, support was always top notch.

I don't think kalle asks for VPS
I think he searches for something cheaper

but because we're talking about VPS i think VPSColo.com is also good (at least it was before 1 year that i moved my customer's site to dedicated)

You should be able to find a pretty good web host in that price range, what do you need in terms of space and bandwidth?
