How to set up a vonage phone at home outside US? any tips? and what are the equipments needed to get a vonage phone number aside from a computer and broadband?
Vonage is just another form of Voice over IP...you can set this up on your own computer, and then find a service online to provide you with a number and the priveleges to use it...
so does that mean an internet connection, a computer, and then i signed up with vonage at vonage.com, i'm all set? no additional equipments to buy??
No, you have to have a VoIP phone, and Modem. If you are not from the US, I doubt you can use Vonage, but you could set up your own VoIP system, you will have to do some research to find out.
go with Skype, same quality and its only $14.95 for the entire year. you can either use a skype enabled phone or an existing phone if you buy a $60 piece of equipment.
correct. i currently use skype for all calling and a phone number as well as voicemail came with my plan
it depnds on your internet connection...tatiana we tried it in smartbro but the quality is not that good...
For the $14.95 plan, it states "SkypeOut Annual Fee - No Incoming Number". But they have one plan that i think accepts incoming call: SkypeIn - Incoming Number $4.39/month and requires SkypeIn in order to be reached by an outside caller.what's that suppose to mean: "SkypeIn"
You can get yahoo messenger incoming number in around $2 or something. you can accept your calls on yahoo messenger. I remember, I used to use it some time back. Check them out.
I am using a Vonage phone in India. You will need a US credit card to sign up for their service. After you signup they will send you a PAP2 Device (Costs $50-60, but if you prepay for 3 months, its free i think). You will need to configure that PAP2 device with your vonage account and after you have configured your phone would be working. You can take that PAP2 device anywhere in the world where you have an Internet connection. Just hook up the LAN cable coming from the Router or Switch or HUB, connect the power supply and attach a telephone instrument with it and you will have your US number working anywhere in the world. I am paying $30 a month and I get unltd. calling to US and Canada plus vocie mail and CLIR. And I have no complaints with service whatsoever. I use it daily for 5+ hours. Now they even have a cordless phone with built in WiiFii receiver. With that you can just walk in to a WiFi zone and switch on that phone and you will get the tone. But reception on their cordless sets is not that great compared to the wired phone using a Linksys PAP2 device.
That answered my question. Thanks @SumitBahl, ididn't know it is this complicated to get a vonage phone. geeeee, i'm thinking about that skype thing. I hope its not that complicated to get one as this can be used only with the computer.
i already told you the quality on skype is pretty good as long as you have a decent broadband connection. its $14.95without a phone # but i think i paid $12 or so for 3 months of a phone # and you can pick any area code in the country, you also get call forwarding and voicemail. YOu can have the calls forwarded to a cell phone if you are offline.
